I had RNY on 18th May and didn't go until 5 days later. My consultant said this is pretty normal and nothing to worry about.

Welcome to the loser's bench! I had mine on 5/18. It was the 4th day before I got "movement" and it wasn't much at that. For me, the rotten gas proceeded it too. I dunno about you but I was on a liquid diet for 2 wks before my surgery & a bowl prep the night before surgery. With only sips of water for the next few days, that doesn't leave much in the intestines to get rid of. When it finally came it was diarrhea. But call your doc & let them know. Most likely they will have you take something to help things along.

I had to ask for a glycerine suppository to have a movement. Then once I got home, I used Miralax for constipation. That stuff is awesome! No belly cramps.

I had rny on 4/29 and had 2 before I left the hospital 4 days later. I never really did have the bad gas or pains and now movement maybe every 3-4 days which from what I have heard is normal.

I had my surgery on Jan 19 of this year. Nothing but complications since then. Two stoma expansions, and then no one could figure out why I am still in severe pain and having to take pain meds.... So when you are on your own trying to find answers, I did find that having a bowel movement every day helped ease pressure, and hence pain. I do use 1/3 serving of Miralax each day, I use a fiber powder daily and if my intestines don't move, my best resort is Dulcolax supposities (This is an OTC item). Yeah, it is kinda yucky....but it works. It isn't cheap, and the generics don't work as well. Between all 3 I seem to have success in this area. You'll just have to try and see what works on your system. Good Luck!

I had to have one before they discharged me from the hospital. After that it got pretty uncomfortable. The nurse called to check on me and told me to fix a smoothie with a banana.

I had RNY on 5/4/09 I didn't have a bowel movement for 11 days afterwards! I believe it may have had something to do with my pain medication, they gave me hydrocodone and it says that it cause constipation! So who knows! on day 12 I was going to go to the doctor but luckily enough I took some benefiber and finally went!
