Question:
Repeat Iron Infusions and Ferritin Levels
Question for the Lucky people who need regular iron infusions. I am 3 years post op. Last year I started Iron Infusions. What criteria does your doctor use to give you another dose. I have had two so far. I don't see why I have to wait until I have symptoms to get the Iron or have my Hgb and Hct drop below normal. — smparker2 (posted on December 14, 2007)

Susan, I don't know much about this except that too much iron can do mucho
damage to your body - joints, organs, etc. So the docs want to be sure you
really need it before giving you infusions. My dad has to have blood taken
(like a pint) every 2-3 months because of too much iron! best of luck to
you --

My hematologist uses the guideline of if Ferritan is lower than 100.
Waiting for the hemagobin to drop puts you way behind in the game because
your reserves are already exhausted.
