Question:
What is a decent rate of weight loss the farther from surgery a person is?
I had GBS Sept. 28, 2005 and lost 49 pounds in seven weeks. Since then, I've only lost about 20 pounds with a total weightloss of about 68-70 pounds in 3.5 months. Have I slowed down too much? How much can I expect to be able to lose at this point considering I can't exercise at the moment? — newslady72712 (posted on January 17, 2006)

and I am now down to 166... a total of 65 pounds gone... So to me I think
we are doing well

I had WLS on Sept. 21st 2005. ATo date I have lost 79 pounds. The chart
says I should have already lost more but I think I am doing well. Try not
to worry about the numbers and just pay attention to how you feel.

I am a little further out than you (June 28th) but I just had my 6 month
checkup yesterday and am down 81 lbs. My doc says with my body mass and fat
index I am doing just fine. Like you I would have like to lose more but I
am happy with what I have; we all lose at different rates. He said I am
losing fat not muscle which is very good. Also you did not say how much you
have to lose; than make a big difference. I think you are doing great!!
Keep up the good work.

jamie- We did not put this weight on overnight and going by your weight
loss to date, you are doing awesome. Everyone loses at a different rate,
so please, for your own peace of mind, stop comparing yorself with
others-whether they had the same type of surgery as you did, or the RNY.
It depends on your starting weight, how you are following your
Surgeons/Nuts food protocol, whether you are adding in some of your old
trigger foods - going out walking etc. Just keep plodding along, and you
will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Stop worrying and just do
what you are advised to do by your medical team. I know its hard to do,
but its the best thing you can do for yourself at this point. Now, if you
had lost only 15 lbs since surgery, then yeah, you should be worried,
however you are doing very well. Relax and enjoy the ride and remember you
have the honeymoon period where you will lose the best;. Blessings to
you

I had my surgery on 10-18-05 and have lost 62 pounds so far. SO you seem
normal to me. I was the same way though I lost 35 pounds in two weeks and
it has taken 8 weeks to loose another 27.

I had my surgery 10/5 (1994) and by Jan of 95, I had lost 61#, as I recall.
Maybe 53? Anyway, you are far ahead of what I did, but I reached my goal
and stay parked 110-115 all these years. The loss DOES slow down, but
think of it as steps. Step-rest-step-rest. The steps become smaller and
the rests become longer.

You have done well thus far, but it takes less calories to run your less
weightier body so of course it will be harder and the weight will come off
more slowly. Rather like a car engine, the more power or pistons it has,
the more petrol it consumes, and the faster it goes the more petrol is
used.
As you get nearer to your goal weight, it will get harder to lose weight
and you will experience some plateaus. This is totally normal. It means
that you are fitter than ever. You have to continue to be vigilent with
your nutrition and exercise harder. But at the end of it, you will not only
weigh less, but be much healthier as well. Remember as it gets harder to
lose weight, this is anoither sign that you are indeed fitter. You will be
able climb steps and stairs, and you won't tire so easily. Life takes on a
whole new meaning when you haven't got weight to slow you down. Have a
wonderfull, healthy, and happy new year.

Hello. I had my surgery October 6th, 2005 a little over 3 months ago now.
As of today I have lost 77 pounds, so I think you are doing fantastic! As
one member said, we didn't put the weight on overnight, and each person is
different.
I know with myself, I went on a plateau for about 2 weeks and didn't lose
anything, then it started again.

Jamie,
Don't pay attention to the scales, your clothes and body will continue to
tell you how it's doing. Weight loss sounds good to me for 3.5 months.
Don't stress about it. You said you can't exercise at the moment -- can
you do any walking? You don't want to lose the weight too fast -- people
will think you're sick or something. Look at Starr Jones -- a lot of
people think she is sick -- then I tell them she had the surgery.
