Question:
Amount of food intake for rest of life???

I was at my doctory follow up appointment last week and I asked if there was a special diet that we were to follow. (12 weeks out)I was told NO just to avoid fat and sugers and white starches eating proteins first as in week seven. I was so shocked at this no diet thing that I forgot to ask if we were only allowed to eat 1/2 cup of food for the rest of our lives. Any one know?? ( I was operated by Dr. Graber in Utica NY on Feb 11, 2010.)    — OntarioSilk (posted on May 28, 2010)

As your pouch heals you'll be able to consume more food. At 11 months out, I'm able to eat about a cup and a quarter to a cup and a half in one sitting, depending on what I'm eating. A couple days prioir to surgery, you should've received a packet of post op info that includes sample meal plans. Ideally, you should avoid high calorie, high fat and high sugar foods and beverages. I'm very reliant on protein shakes and bars. I eat a TON of chicken, crab and shrimp. My side dishes are some combo of mixed veggies, brown rice, baked sweet potato or mashed potato. If your surgeon's practice has a nutritionist on staff, it would be a good idea to consult with him or her to create a meal plan for you. You can also review www.bariatriceating.com for recipe ideas or do a Google search on "post op bariatric surgery eating" or something similar. It's not quite as scary as it seems. Good luck!

The reason I got a LapBand is because I had never limited my portions, and that was where I needed help. I was morbidly obese simply becaue I was unable to live with limits of how much I ate. Today, I am quite content and full on a half-cup or palm size portions. I only eat my regular meals 3 x day with an occasional treat unually 1 x week.. I had my LapBand in November of 2008 and I have lost 152# and I continue to lose (between 5-10# a month) without an adjustment since July 2009! LapBad works for me by limiting my poirtions, eating very few carbs (30Gms/day) and lots of protein. When I decide to become morbidly obese again, God forbid!, I will go back to pigging out on as much of whatever I want again! LOL* My Dr. told a nurse where I work for her to "get out of my office and don't come back" because she gained weight in 3 consecutive visits. Now she is stuck with an appliance inside her and no other Dr. will touch her. She was non-compliant, and now her insurance has dropped her as well. That was all I needed to hear to keep me on track. Good luck, keep asking questions.

Hi Pam, if you look on the "green sheet" that Dr.Graber gave you it says 1/2 cup food per meal for lifetime portion control, but Dr.Fitzer told us in our consultation that it would be up to a cup of food per meal. But that all depends on what you are eating (how dense it is). For example, you can eat more garden salad than you can a steak.

Thanks everyone for your answers. I did look on the sheet and did read 1/2 cup but my ouuch is complaining every 2 hours. I relized that is was not head hunger but actual hunger as I was eating foods that went through the pouch to easily. Cotage cheese and yougurt and such so I have now bulked up on solid proteins so to speak lol and find that I can last 4 hours between meals. Thanks again to those that made the kind offer s of their suggestions. Have a blessed day Pam
