Question:
I don't know what to do.

I had RNY on 07/13/2009 and I have lost a total of 29 pounds, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I want to be happy for others but I get sick and tired of hearing how other people have lost double what I have in this short abount of time. I know everybody is different and I didn't put the weight on overnight but I feel like I'm in a losing battle. I had my first plateau at 2 weeks which lasted for about 2 weeks. I saw my dodctor last month and he said I should lose another 30 lbs by October, I don't really see how that is going to happen with my slow progress I just feel like it's going to take forever. Also I'm only getting in about 300-500 calories aday if I'm lucky and to be honest I have never had more than 24 oz of water in a day. I do work and exercise on a daily basis but I was wondering if I'm not eating enough or maybe I'm eating the wrong foods. My husband is currently deployed and I want my weight loss to be a big suprise but don't think it will happen. Please someone tell me what to do.    — angelhonee (posted on September 5, 2009)

you are doing really well. i don't even know why i am writing this. you're not going to be 120 lbs after 6 weeks. 29 lbs is spectacular progress. everyone plateaus at 2 weeks-- it has to do with something called glycogen which is an energy storing substance in your muscles. as long as you are getting fewer calories than you burn you will lose weight. you're doing fine.

Getting your water and protein are both very important. Maybe not getting enough water is holding your weight loss up. But 29 pounds is great keep a smile on your face =) God bless and good luck!!!

It's my understanding that we should be drinking a minimum of 48 oz of water a day. You're not drinking enough water.

I agree with what the others have said. I had RNY on July 8th. I have lost 35 pounds and I am satisfied with that because I know that I MUST continue to lose, so it's not like the numbers are not going to continue to drop. PLUS I figure if the weight drops a little more slowly, I have a better chance of my skin being able to keep up with the loss by shrinking as I lose. The down side of losing allot very quickly is that the skin is out of sync with the decrease in size. Most of us suffer with some hanging skin. I just figure it will be less for me if I lose weight just a tad more slowly. You will lose weight, don't worry, and your husband will be so impressed when he sees you. Keep your chin up.

I have the same problem... I had RNY on July 23 and haven't lost anything in the past 3 weeks... it is sooo frustrating. Like you I do not get in enough calories, my nutritionist warned me that if you don't get in enough calories it can stall your weight loss (your body is in starvation mode and is holding on to everything). I have tried to eat more, walk more each day, and drink (I know it feels impossible to eat what we are supposed to and drink all that we have to in one day - I usually don't but I try more each day). I understand completely how you feel, just hang in there everyone says we will get through this!!!! (I hope!)

First, I want to say "thank you" to both you and your husband for the sacrifices you are making for our country. Freedom isn't free, and it is folks like you who pay the brunt of the price. Second, by having the surgery, you made a tremendous step forward in licking our mutual addiction: food. Work on the health issues, (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual), and the weight WILL come off. It's never fast enough for any of us. But it will teach you patience and perseverence, and with your husband deployed, you'll need both!

I had my surgery the week before you and have lost just about the same as you. I can see how you can get a little frustrated when you hear about those losing 40-60 pounds to your 29. But as the previous posters said, you WILL lose...you can't not, and the more slowly you lose, the better you will look (your skin will shrink with you). As far as getting enough protein, I know it's hard when you can't eat much. What has helped me is the meal plans on Bariatriceating.com (http://www.bariatriceating.com/BEhealthnutrition/foodjournal.php) There are suggestions and ideas for each meal....it really helps me when I'm not sure of exactly what I should be eating. But most importantly....don't lose heart....the weight WILL come off & your honey will be so proud of you!

Do not give up you will loose... However, as another one posted you are not getting enough water or calories. I had my surgery in August of 08 and I went through a phase where I thought the less consumed the faster the weight would come off... I was wrong. every person is different, however, once I increased to about 900 cal per day and really drank my fluids the weight started comim off. If you are not getting enough protein add protein drinks to you calorie count. If you don't like plain water there are a million calorie free or low cal things you can add to it. DON"T GIVE UP... FYI... I can tell you from experience that he won't care what you look like when he comes home as long as you are there with a huge hug and a big sloppy kiss.

You are doing great! But I understand your frustrations - I am a year out as of yesterday, and it seems the further out I get the more I plateau. But take your measurements every month and look at those - it is amazing! Also, don't expect it to be this fast for the rest of the time - the first month you lose the most, but then it will slow down some. My surgeon told me if you lose more than 12 lbs in a month, it is either water or muscle - and you don't want to lose muscle! It was really hard for me to drink enough water for nearly 4 months - I just couldn't get it down - not to mention all the protein! The shakes/protein drinks were the only thing that helped me for the first 6 months. But not getting enough water in can slow the weight loss down as well as not getting in enough protein. And then the last piece of the puzzle - that "E" word - exercise. If you can just get out and walk for 30 minutes a day, that would help you tremendously! But be sure you make it part of your day - schedule it in, and don't let anything else come in the way of it. Treat it as a doctor appt that you wouldn't cancel. And even if you don't feel like going walking, make yourself do it - once you get started, you will feel so much better and it will be fun and you'll feel better about yourself. Find a friend who would be willing to be your support person for these walks - who will get out there and do it with you and encourage you. If you have a dog, take them with you for the walk. Or if you have kids, get them to go with you - it's a great way to get kids more active as well. Our children tend to learn our habits (especially our bad ones), so now is the perfect time to retrain them - and they'll be excited to help you out as you will have so much more energy for them. I know I am a year out from the VGS, and it does get more difficult the further out you get, but making those changes now will make all the difference. And later on in your journey if you feel stalled or you think you might returning to some of your bad eating habits, try the 5 day pouch test - it gets you back on track. Congrats! You are already a success! Keep up the good work.

I saw a picture of you on your profile and you look great. You will lose the weight.. Be patient. I know you have heard all of this before but hang in there. I sometimes think that it is wrong for a doctor to put a number on how much you should lose..He or she should know that we are all different. I to have a hard time getting my fluids in to this day (I am 16 months post op) and I know when I don't get in my fluids my weight slows down..I have to force myself to drink...Good luck and you look fabulous.....

Hi And congrats on your loss thus far. You are doing well. My clinic says you are to lose about 20 lbs a month and you are right on. Now...If you are drinking a small amount...you could be dehydrated. And this is not a good thing. You will not lose a pound if you are. I was dehydrated and it took me 2-3 weeks to get re hydrated drinking about 90 ounces a day to get there. I knew I was dehydrated because my eyes didn't tear when I yawned and I had little saliva. You know when you yawn how your mouth kind of fills with spit..mine didn't. I hope you aren't, but please do get all your fluids in. Best of luck to you and congrats again! Hugs,Kim

You will lose the weight. I had the same problem last year after RNY on 7/22/08. The weight comes off slowly for some people, continue to drink alot of water. Nevalle W.

I am not sure if this has any bearing on what your are talking about, I had my proximal bypass in 2007, 250 pounds give or take, funny how you forget lol...here it is 2009, I finally hit my goal here a month or so ago...130 actually passed my goal which was 135...there were days the weight stayed, days I would lose a pound gain back two, or lose 5 pound in a day and gain one or two back the next.. Some days or weeks it wouldn't move one way or the other...Well now my problem is a tiny bit different..How to keep it on..I am afraid to go for a walk in fear I will lose ten pounds..LOL.. It takes time, slow is good, Fast not so good, and with this surgery I learned Patience is a definite virtue. I quit looking at the scale except in the doctors office for my 3 mo. check ups..I quit worrying about it..then here a mo. or so ago. Hubby says here get on the scales..I nearly fainted..(not really) but wow, 130 I was not expecting it..I went shopping... Try not to worry talk to your doctor make sure everything is ok, make sure you are eating the way he wants you to,then forget about it..one day you will look and it will be gone.. Big hugs to you I know its hard it takes everything we thought we knew about dieting and losing weight and tosses it right out the window..they did say NEw Life Style..LOL.. Big Hugs Gabby
