Question:
I am 3 days post op and having lots of gas pain
I had lap RNY on 3/16/09 and today is 3/18/09. I came home from the hospital last night didn't sleep well I was okay if I was on my Right side but still up every hour. I called the surgon and my pulse is normal so he thinks I am okay and said he would re-admit me to the hospital but I prefer to stay at home. I have Vicodin for pain but I just can't seem to fart maybe only 5 times since surgery. I started walking the halls Monday night. I have continued to walk. I am a little teary and wish I felt better. Does anyone have any sugestions and/or uplifting messages please respond. Please tell me it will get better. — BTimofeev (posted on March 18, 2009)

I can still remember the gas pain and it has been over 2 years. I had it in
my shoulder blades. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot you can do
besides walk to get the gas moving. It will get better I promise. I
remember it got a little better every day. Make sure you take your pain
meds if you need them. You need to stay on top of the pain instead of
waiting until it is unbearable. This site is great for advise, but remember
what works for one may not work for all. Good luck. Paula

Just give your self time to heal. You will have problems turning on your
left for several weeks. That side is very tender and heals slowly. The gas
will take time but will pass.
Got very teary the second day after surgery. No real reason just had to
spend the day weeping. My support nurse walked the halls of the hospital
with me and just told me to let it out. Part of it is the relief that it is
finally donee, the other part is what have I done to myself.
Getting clearance and everything is so hard that when it is finally done,
sometimes the relief just makes you cry.

Had my RNY on Oct 2007 and have lost 130lbs since then but yes the gas pain
at first......
My doctor told me to use "GAS X " STRIPS Yes they do work. But be
sure to just use the strips.. Just lay it on your tongue.
Good luck and GOD Bless

It does get better...WALK WALK WALK...Some of you all get it really
bad...The gases they pump you up with for lap rny can take a while to be
absorbed and released...Then comes the "farting kind of gas" as
well...and I went on probiotics after I learned aboutthem from my Nut and
that made a HUGE difference in gas production. They keep your bodies
natural flora (bacteria)in balance...and that helps you absorb your
nutrients better as well. There is no good reason I can think of to NOT
take probiotics...Ask your doc! For those who take antibotics...you kill
all the flora in you intestines and that is a SUPER good time to take
probiotics as well...They help with dairy, lactose, sugar...When I eat
sugar...I get wicked gas, complete with aromatic smells! UGH!!!...Bad
baceria LOVE LOVE LOVE Sugar and simple carbs and lactose/dairy...Anytime
you over feed bad bacteria...their waste is what causes the gas! (gross
huh?) Well probiotics are healthy bacteria that eat BAD
bacteria...so...less trouble with multiplying blooms of bad bacteria!
Yogurt is made with some of the common probiotics ...Try eating yogurt
regularly or ask your doc for a good probiotic...There are so many benefits
to taking probiotics...I just take one weekly or if I am over indulging in
dairy (I love cheese) But I am lactose intolerant so I am armed when I need
to be! Otherwise, hubby makes me sleep in the guest bedroom! LOL Ilearned
to get it under control quickly! Before probiotics the smell could go on
for weeks! UGH! Never again!

I am 9 days out from lap RNY and still get gassy especially at night. It is
slowly getting better. I am walking 2 miles a day and that has really
helped. It seems to build up until I think I'm a baloon then when it starts
to go it really goes. Luckily my wife is a sound sleeper. :)

Things will get better real soon!! I rocked in my rocking chair for the
first couple weeks. I used the "bed buddy" on my tummy and
shoulder(the wierd looking tube you put in the microwave that heats up).
The rocking motion helped a lot with the gas and made me feel like I was
helping for clots as my legs were moving and of course it was very
soothing. If you can get someone to rub you back it seems to move the gas
along also thats in your body. Probably all sounds strange and not very
scientific but it worked for me. Good luck things will ease up soon.

have someone take you for a car ride..about an hour...worked great for
me..I had not been able to pass gas and this helped me. Before the ride I
could only consume about 20 ounces a day after,...I was able to get about
50 ounces a day. Good luck and hang in there! hugs,Kim

I agree with several things posted here: gas-x strips, walking, rocking in
a rocking chair, a heating pad or hot water bottle, massage the back, a car
ride, a warm cup of water or tea if you are allowed to have it (peppermint
tea helped me)with other surgeries. Good Luck When it starts to pass you
will be in heaven.

I can remember (from over 5 years ago) that the gas coming from my tummy
was so loud that my hubby thought it was thunder, it was unbelieveable, I
didn't know at the time what it was and I thought my organs were actually
moving around! I have not been on this sight in a while but is it common
for your doctor to give you vicoden? I remember I was given a bottle of
liquid pain medication which makes sense since you are not to have anything
solid for a while, not even vitamins. Best of luck!

BARBARA, I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE SAYING!! I HAD MY SLEEVE DONE ON THE
3RD AND THE GAS WAS JUST HORRIFIC. I WALKED SO MUCH IN THE HOSP THEY HAD
TO TELL ME TO REST! I ATE GAS X AND GAS CHEWS LIKE M&M'S AND STILL NO
RELIEF. THEN FOR EVERYTIME I DRANK EVEN WATER, I WOULD BURP! THEN PASS GAS.
PLEASE KNOW IT DOES GO AWAY. KEEP YOU CHIN UP! AND GOD SPEED.

Im preop until late summer but Ive known about the abdominal gas since I
had labroscopic gall bladder surgery about 10 yrs ago.. Noone at the
hospital told me that they pump gas into your abdominal cavity to make it
easier to do the surgery. When I got home, I was in sooo much pain. It took
me abut 24 hrs to realize it might be gas so I drove and hobbled into the
nearest pharmacy(cause hubby wouldnt go for me) I bought the extra strength
gas-x and it worked great for me. I do have a wonderful husband but he
isnt perfect, so Im going to have EVERYTHING ready for me for when I go
home. I get the best advice here.
This site is a true blessing. I just read on here that they use the larger
instruments on the left side so you have more pain there. Suzette

It'll get better. I haven't had WLS yet but had a lap appendectomy a
couple years ago. I developed an ileus (paralyzed intestine) afterwards
and that gas just sat there. It was the most horrid pain EVER! I walked
and walked and walked the hospital halls... seriously, at least two hours
a day, I was walking. It took a good 10 days but it passed (literally..
haha). Hang in there!

Its all worth it when you hop on that scale in a week or two!! Also what
helped me was warm water with a little lemon and a splenda pack. The warmth
makes things pass faster than ice!

No one prepared me for the gas pains and i did not realize what it was. All
I knew was I hurt and for me if I get a little gas crossways I am
miserable. For the first two days the surgery didnt seem to bother me not
even the incision but when I discovered what it was thru trial and error.
I drank hot tea with camomille in it and I started tootin like a pack mule
and it went on for a week. But oh I felt so much better and that was about
the only problem I had. Drs. Please let your patients in on this and give
them something for it. In the meantime walk walk walk and drink the hot
tea with the camoille.

Hello,
I am 6 weeks out and I had prepared myself for everything I thought. The
pain I thought was coming from where they did the surgery but NO it WAS GAS
PAIN. I promise it will go away. The thing that helped me is to recline not
to lay flat or on my left side I just now can lay on my left side without
it twicking. You will get through this it just takes a little time. I am
now feeling great and 40 lbs down at 6 weeks Good Luck and God Bless Stacie
