Question:
B-12 overdose?
I had briefly read somewhere on here about someone taking to much B-12 and overdosing. Does anyone have anymore info. on that? Tonight I got really dizzy after takin' my meds and B-12 was one of them, worried I might be takin' too much? Or maybe I'm becomin' dehydrated? Just worried and looking for more info. Thank You everyone, I know I can count on everyone's support on here, this site has been a Godsend!!!! — paislieghstar (posted on October 29, 2008)

My primary told me that you can never get to much B-12 because you will pee
it out.

From what I've read, B12 is not something that has a history of overdosing,
to a toxicity level. I take a liquid vitmamin that has 16 times the RDA of
B12. I also use Baricare, a protein supplement, that has 50 times the RDA
of B12. I'm almost 30 months post op, and am still "upright and
walking" , with no B12 toxicity issues. DAVE

It's hard to over dose on most vits...because for the most part you have to
be taking really high doses for a long time! The most toxic vits are the
fat soluble ones.. But because RNYers malabsorb fats and oils...we also
malabsorb the fat soluble vits the first poster spoke about (A, D, E and K)
with A and D being the most toxic...These are the ones that many RNYers
become deficient in so it is important to monitor them either way and
especially if you are taking high doses! So you REALLY have to swallow
some super high doses of any vits for quite a while to overdose! But it
does happen! My B12 was high at 1127 and even my doc said "GREAT!!!
leave it there" And my own personal reasearch shows B-12 as a harmless
vitamin even in high doses...This is another good reason to make sure you
get labs at LEAST yearly to monitor your vit levels! Go every 6 months if
you have deficiencies or highs that need to be watched! Anytime you feel
any symptoms like dizziness, you might call your doc and ask for labs to
see what's possibly going on. Don't ignore symptoms...and find out for
certain what's causing it! I felt dizzy and ignored it for too long...and
found myself on 2 months bed rest with anemia and malnutrition and I had
recently gained several pounds! (at the time) So malnutrition was my LAST
thought!

I agree, I don't think it was your B12. Being dizzy isn't normal and can
be a sign of many, many things.... anemia, dehydration, pregnancy,
irregular heart rhythms, etc. Please call your doc and get in to see him
asap.
Have you been getting in adequate amounts of protein and fluids?
Best of luck,

I was told by my Hematologist and Bariatric Surgeon, that if you took too
much B12 for your body to absorb, you'd just pee it out. You should present
this same question to your Doc or support group........or do an internet
seach? :) Darlene

Repeating what some have said above: Had my 1 yr post RNY followup appt a
couple weeks ago. My B12 labs showed 3 x's the normal level. My nurse said
the excess just goes out in urine - no other side effects. Told me to cut
back on my dosage.
