Hi Brenda, Congrats on getting your surg date! I would check with your
daughters DR. I dont know her age or anything about her, but.. my syster
in law is also on insulin. She is 37 yrs old. She had a Lap-band done a
year ago and has done very well. She has an insulin pump and has been able
with her DR for the diabetis able to cut way back ob her insulin. Please ,
talk to her Dr before you do anything.
I wish you a very speedy recover after surg and will keep you in my
prayers. Julie

When I found out the collection of 19 drugs I was taking for Diabeties,
blood pressure and colestroal were not enought and I was going to have to
go on insulin as a type 2 after 25 years fighting diabeties, I had a
gastric bypass, and I could not beleive that today just 4 months later, I
have been off all those drugs for over two months and have a A1C of 5.6. I
only take synthroid now, plus a load of vitamins and minerals of course,
but the real questions is what is your daughters BMI. if it is over 40,
then WLS will help. I lost 40 lbs and my blood sugar changed a great deal,
but at 60 pounds, I did not need it any longer. Keep in mind this is a
eating change that she will live with the rest of her life. I am glad to
do it to add to my life. She needs to decide with her own doctor what she
wants to do. Best of Success to both of you.

ANY will help her. There are a number of factors that will determine which
surgery is RIGHT for her. One of the PRIMARY considerations will be Body
Mass Index. Many Surgeons prefer to do the Gastric Bypass or the Duodenal
Switch for patients with a BMI over 50. For those with a BMI UNDER 50 MANY
now prefer the VSG but some still prefer the LapBand or the old fashioned
Vertical Banded Gastrectomy (Stomach Stapling). If your daughter is still
capable of getting pregnant and considering the possibility, the doctors
MAY want to give her the LapBand because of the flexibility it affords in
allowing them to give bot the mother and the developing baby to gain more
sustenance during pregnancy. If your daughter has IMMUNE SYSTEM issues,
the VSG is probably the best way to go. These types of things are best
decided between the patient and the doctor. It is ALWAYS good for the
PATIENT to have done as much research as POSSIBLE before going to SEE the
DOCTOR. If you want to know MORE about what to expect from each different
option, check my profile page. I have done some research about the most
COMMON forms of weight loss surgery. You will find a great deal of
information there and links that will help you find MORE. If you don't see
what you looking for right away, look into the archived blogs. It won't be
TOO far in.
I hope this helps,
Hugh
