Question:
How to get enough protein in the first three weeks?

Hello, I am 10 days out of surgery, I haved tried numerous protein shakes, powders etc, but all seem to make me nauseous. I find I don't want to eat anything and need to force myself. I have already lost 22 lbs. YEH... I am in my full liquids cycle until Sunday and then go more forward to soft diet. The point is I know I am not getting enough protein, any suggestions...Thanks and Good luck to everyone..    — IrishSpirit (posted on December 5, 2007)

Without fail your fluids and protein are must haves from the get-go. Have you tried the Protein Bullets? They have up to 42g per serving and do not require a lot of drinking, on the other hand you need your fluids too... Isopure is pretty tasty, cold, and gives a good deal of protein. These two products can be picked up at the Vitamin Shop/GNC and the like or even on line. If you are mixing powders for shakes or using a blender for shakes make sure you are letting all the foam settle or separate it off and let it settle (to finish later)... the foam can really make you feel full and gassy, thus making it hard to get down. I am two weeks out today and left the hospital on a soft diet (i.e. scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, broth, jello and popsicles) and I've lost 26 pounds up to yesterday... often I feel very full and just have to set my beverage down and pick it up again when I'm ready. Good luck to you, Leslie

It all depends on what you can afford--protein bullets are expensive and might not be right for you. It's a hit and miss at this stage. Any Whey Tasteless protein powder is what worked for me. You can get it at GNC (cheaper if you go into the store and buy it) It is not 100% tasteless, but it's like 90% tasteless when added to crystal light, tea etc. You can add it to hot things as well as puddings etc. Good luck, God bless and welcome to the losing side and yr doing awesome on your loss!

Hey Debbie, I too had troouble with the protein shakes. I am 6 weeks out and had the VSG. Just recently I discovered Nectar (Fuzzy Navel. You mix it with water, it has 90 caloriies, and it takes like orange juice with a little pulp. I like it. I got it on line at SI03.com (that's s then I as in indian, zero, three. It cost 44.95 for a big cannister of it and take included shipping. You will need the protein supplements indefinitely becuse you won't be able to eat enough to get in the 60 grams of protein required. The Fuzzy Navel Nectar is great for me. Good luck. Pat

I think what you are going through is "normal" for MOST of us! I too remember the stuggle with getting in the protein AND the liquids! I struggled with the TASTE, not being hungry, the "texture" of the protein drinks (if they sit too long). But my advice to you is the same as I was told by my surgeon, "just do the BEST you can!" I'm sure alot of us did not get in the required amount of protein and fluids, but yet, we are all here to encourage you. Good Luck.......

I am 9 days out and have been using Diabetic Boost for my protein. It's relatively cheap and the taste is ok. I'm starting to get sick of it now, but it's pretty good. Good luck!

I had a terrible time those first two weeks with the liquid stuff. I know I did not get enough protein and I think a lot of WL patients have had the same problem. Once you start Stage 3 you will get your protein in. I was worried like you during those first two weeks. I find myself not hungry so I set times to eat and I measure and weigh my food. It is also important to get all of the water in. Good luck in your journey.

I just ordered a great book , Before and After, by Susan Maria Leach. It had wonderful high-protein recipes. One that sounded good was an egg custard. If you have a recipe for that, try adding Splenda. I like all the nectars sold at this site. My favorites are choclate, pina-colata, and the latte.

The drink I ordered is called Pro-Stat64, wild cherry flavor. I haven't tried it yet but will let you all know. But at 15 grams of protein per once I can shoot it down in one gulp....like cough syrup... Thanks for all the encourgement from everyone that responsed to my question.
