Question:
Dizziness, tired, and nausea???

I am 6 months out and down 153 lbs (yay!) about 5 days ago I started getting really dizzy periodically throughout the day and feel nausea also. I DID start my period 3 days ago too, but that's never happened to me before. I go see my Dr tomorrow (before anyone comments like last time "ever think of asking your Dr.?) I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas, it's kinda freaking me out-- I've had a pretty uneventful first 6 months post-op-wise so far. Thanks in advance!    — airbear762000 (posted on July 18, 2007)

It may be that you lack vitamin b 12 .If you cant take liquid or chewable b 12 the doctor can give you a b12 shot. Protien is important too. Lacking vitamin b 12 is very common with the surgery. Good luck

I've experienced that too -- Dr. solution -- increase my water intake. He wanted me to drink more and eat less -- which is easy to do because I'm sitting down all day. I'm almost 6 months out and have lost what I now term -- a first grader. Usually when I increase my water intake, after a few days I feel better. I went to see my primary care and she thought it might be vertigo and gave me some drugs. She said vertigo is usually a symptom of something else; however, she didn't find anything else. My vitamin D and protein where low so I reved that up and that appears to be leveling things off. Last week the nausea was so bad I went home early from work and call my surgeon and he said increase water intake and purchase an over the counter Prevacid and take twice a day -- but I take as needed. So I'm concentrating AGAIN on my water intake and making sure I get in my protein along the way. Starting your period can wipe you out too -- I'm exhausted a few days before my period starts -- I just want to sleep.

My surgery was 10/03/05. I started experiencing the same thing 6-8 months out. I figured out it was my carbs, and getting too much of them. Now, if I watch my carb/sugar intake, I don't get the light-headed, dizzy feel. If I cheat, I also pay for it about 30 minutes to an hour after I eat. This is not a very technical response, but just wanted to share my experience. Good luck!

I find that when I start to feel tired and dizzy it is usually time for my B12 shot. I try to intake more liquids and protein and find it carries me through until my scheduled appointment. I go into my general physician once a month and the nurse gives me my B12 shot. It is always well worth the trip. I am down 67 lbs. (Half my goal!) in only 3 months and full of energy. Good luck and take care.

It could be anemia. The same thing happened to me. My first 7 months were uneventful and I started feeling tired and dragging all the time. Then I was dizzy and fainted a few times. Turned out my blood count was low, I was anemica and had an ulcer!

Hi Aaryn, thanks for your question and I am so glad you are staying on top of your visits with your doctor. At 6 months out they should be checking your blood work and seeing if everything is in order. I suspect that you might have a hydration issue. It is VERY HOT this time of year. I don't know what part of the country you are in, but here where I am we are at 100 degree days and it is sooooooooo easy to get dehydrated for the wls patient. You can drink other stuff, but if you are not getting in a lot of water and are in the heat and humidity, you can get zapped. Being too busy zaps us of hydration as well. I think you are wise to see your surgeon and get the regular check up, but if that turns out ok, I suggest beefing up the water and being sure you are getting proper rest, especially during the heat of the day. Congrats on your great weight loss! You go! Patricia P

Your body is Dehydrated. Drink more Zero Calorie Fluids. At least 64 ounces each day but the best is 2 gallons each day. Yes you'll get to know every restroom every where you go.

Sounds like you may be anemic. Make sure you tell your Dr. about it. Hopefully he will order a CBC to check if your levels are low. Best of luck. Luanne

Sounds like dehydration or possibly anemia. Your doc should be able to tell when he does a CBC. Good luck to you!
