Question:
Do the majority of post-op RNY have excessive gas, long term?

I just need some real answers. I'm scheduled August 20th, and despite all the success stories, I just keep thinking of all the negative. Two girls at work have had the surgery, but I don't think they'd like for me to ask about their flatulence routine. As it is now, many times throughout the day, I'm looking for a quiet corner to let one loose. (pardon me for seeming so crude) i sure would love especially to hear from long term post ops! Thanks everyone!    — starby (posted on June 30, 2007)

I'm no southern lady...I'll talk to you about it. LOL. :) I'm 14 months post-op and I don't have a consistent problem with gas. Now I can say that when I do...watch out! Ha. For me, it's all what I eat. If I have really bad gas one day, chances are I haven't eaten healthy. I also take a Walmart gas-x type pill when there's a problem and that fixes it. If you still have a lot of problems, check to see what you're eating. Maybe lactose is to blame. Congrats on 8/20! Good luck! ~Sarah in VA

Hi EB, thanks for your question. Yes, I am afraid that many of us have gas issues. I refuse to take anything for it, but I do have it. I am always looking for a quiet place. For the most part, I have little to no odor, and my family, God Bless them, have learned that I am just a gassy person (our middle son told me recently when I passed gas, he said "Mom, just be sure I am in front of you, and I kind of missed you passing gas at college anyway, it's ok". Made me laugh. If you keep your bowels moving, it helps. I use Miralax when I get stuffed up a little, but the odor is usually not there for me, but the gas is my daily friend, sorry. By the way, I would take twice the gas I have now for the weight loss I have been able to achieve. I am so thankful that I have gas issues and not weight issues. Take care, Patricia P.

Gas, gas, GAS!! Lots of it. And it stinks, even to me. But it's a small price to pay for not having to live with fat, fat, FAT!! So light a scented candle and just smile, smile, SMILE!

I am 14 years post op and I still do it if I drink milk or have Mexican food. You will get better with time and you will learn what sets yours off, I also do not eat BEANS! Lord they will make me have enough gas I could power downtown Houston on the emissions! lol

I am 15 months post-op, and YES YES YES I still have a bit of gas. I too look for those corners. Or I run to the nearest bathroom and turn on the water so I can release it. I eat very healthy and I can eat enough protein throughout my day that I do not require supplementing. However between the dairy products milk, and cheese, and my veggies, I get gassy. To me it's worth the huge amount of weight loss I have had in the last 15 months. To date I have lost -226 lbs. So a little flatulence in my book, is totally worth it.

I suffered through this and finally found the answer...AVOID ADDITIVES/PRESERVATIVES!!! WHOLE foods, whole grain whole wheat breads (delis or made yourself in your breadmaker) and pastas, and fresh fresh fresh foods... It is about 6 weeks of decontaminiation from soda and salt and preservatives that is miserable but in the end... properly formed stools and nearly non-existent and non-foul gas... Best Wishes! Thank you for asking this, I was just going to. I am just a little bit past 3 months post op and thought mine would never get better! Seems like I'm either burping or passing gas no matter WHAT I ate, however I do eat a lot of veggies, so I know where that comes from Sheesh....but in the past few days I have FINALLY noticed it's not as often....I know I might always have this problem, but as one of the other posters said, small price to pay and I'd rather have this then the 66.5 lbs I've lost! Good luck and God Bless!

Yes, we have gas. I think its the protein drinks and I've noticed as I start to eat more foods -- the smell -- my goodness. You can bet your co-workers are having this issue; however, they are probably silent and odorless poots. When I feel a real fart coming on, I get up and go to the bathroom and let'er rip --see there goes one now -- all because I'm drinking a protein drink, I've had a salad today and an Edy's sugar-free Ice cream bar -- the first I've had since the surgey -- 4 mths out. While at work, most of my food intake are fluids -- if I eat anything it's Chicken salad from the Cafe or Soy Crisps or Peanut Butte and apples -- something safe and doesn't cause too much gas.
