Question:
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY EXERCISE STOPS MY WEIGHT LOSS,
AS I'VE POSTED BEFORE I'M A SLOW LOSER, SO I HAVE TRIED EXERCISING MORE, BUT WHEN I DO THE WEIGHT LOSS STOPS COMPLETELY, THEN I'LL STOP, THEN BAM! 5LBS LOST, WHATS GOING ON. SHOULD I JUST GET IN THE PROTEIN, WATER, AND VITAMINS AND LET THE TOOL RUN ITS COURSE. HELP! — RNAY (posted on April 12, 2007)

Hello,
You are building muscle and that is good for your body. When you lose and
you don't exercise the skin sags. I would still exercise even if the
weight loss stalls it comes back.
Good luck!

Okay, speaking from experience, I thought I was a slow loser, and I still
exercise. What I have found is, weigh in once weekly NO SOONER.... you are
exchanging lean muscle mass for the fat. Lean tissue weighs more than fat.
By building lean muscle mass you will increase your metabolism, even when
you are at rest. By exercising you will help keep as tone as possible vs
lg amts of sagging skin. Also, there is a "honeymoon" period for
the RNY which they say is 6mos-1yr. I am at the 6mo mark. The honeymoon
phase being that no matter what you do or don't do, you will lose weight.
But, by exercising, you are instilling GOOD habits to replaced the
unhealthy ones that got you where you are today. This way when the
honeymoon period is over, you will be ahead of the game. My surgeon told
me at my 3mo post op visit not to pay attention to the scale so much as how
I was feeling and how my clothes were fitting. He told me that I would
drive myself crazy and sabotage myself as your weight can fluctuate as much
as 5lbs up or down, normally. So this is the long answer to your question,
but the nitty-gritty answer is don't stop exercising, get in at least 60+
grams of protein a day (3 meals and 2 snacks daily), your water, vitamins.
The tool is only a tool. Anology: a hammer can't hit a nail by itself, it
needs someone to pick it up and use it..... So USE your tool to your
advantage. (also try not exercising more than 1 hr daily) you can get in
30 min of exercise daily, even if you break it up into 3 10min
uninterrupted sessions, the fat burning will be just as effective. good
luck to you...

What Kari said is great advice. I'm almost 2 months out and don't try to
weigh myself often. I'm allowing my cloths to direct me and they have
directed me down two pant sizes.
Don't stop working out; however, you may want to add some different
exercises because if you do the same ones all the time your body will
become immuned. If you've been getting your cardio from just one machine
-- try another. On warm days (Lord I hope they come soon) go out to a high
school track and walk. Our bodies like a variety of exercise.

It is a VERY common myth that muscle weighs more than fat..No it doesn't
they BOTH weigh the same! Fat takes up more space because it's not as
lean, but fat & muscle weigh the same! It sounds like your hitting
plateau's...change out your exercise routine. Like one day do cardio, the
next do strength training. Another day ride a bike, and still another day
just walk. You have to keep shocking your body so it doesn't get used to a
routine. Think about it, how do body builders exercise? They certainly
don't continue doing the same routine day after day. They break it up like
I stated previously. Just realize that exercise does NOT stop the weight
loss. It's your body and females hold water weight at different times of
the month. Good luck!

fat and muscle have different volumes for example a cup of fat as is
deposited on a body did you ever watch wrestling and see what a guy with a
hard body weights. no fat on them but massive weight so a pound of
feathers and a pound of lead weigh the same but the volume is differnt so
yes lose lbs of fat drop inches but gain lbs of muscle

Most definitely, do NOT quit exercising! You need to get rid of fat and
build muscle, it takes a while for this to even out. You also need to
develop a healthy lifestyle that you can maintain even AFTER you've lost
all your weight. Keeping it off is going to be hard if you don't exercise.
I don't weigh very often because I get really depressed if the numbers
don't match my expectations, but I guage my success on my clothes fitting
better and my knees hurting less and my ability to move around more
"normally". I lose very slowly sometimes, but try to ignore the
scale and just do what's right for my body. HEALTH is the goal, not simply
weight loss. Being sedentary is NEVER good for your health.

hi there
it's not a matter of the weight loss stopping -- it's a matter of you are
building muscle -- muscle weighs more than fat -- so in order to lose the
fat you have to turn it into muscle which in turn will raise your
metabolism and keep your weight loss going and then the metabolism will
maintain your weight -- good luck to you

No one has addressed the possible issue of you may not be getting in enough
calories for the amount of calories that you are expending in a day. Take a
good look at the calories in vs the calories out in the course of you day.
If you are not getting in enough calories in your body will think that you
are starving it and it will hoard what you put into it. You may want to
touch base with a professional exercise physiologist to have your diet and
exercise program reviewed. See if you can touch base with Jeremy Gentiles
or one of the other experts on this sites exercise forum. You might want to
post this same question there also.

I just want to put my 2 cents in. I am a nurse, and I think there is no
research on this phenomenon. I don't understand it, I have experienced it
and this needs to be studied.
