Question:
My platelet count & white blood cell count are low never had a problem B4 wls
could this be from fobi pouch procedure? I have never had a problem with platelets or anything like this. The bone marrow biopsy came back negative & the doctors can't seem to find anything & I need to have gallbladder surgery, one dr says the plt ct is fine & the surgeon says its too low. Any info would be appreciated! — tinanitch (posted on September 18, 2006)

I have ITP, which is a disease of low platelets. Always did, so not WLS
induced. I don't know anyone else with it. The WBC might or might not be
related, but I think I'd be asking a hematologist if it stays too low. How
are your iron, ferritin, B12 & folate levels?

I have had ITP for about 10 years. May platelets are low but healthy so I
go to a hematologist four time a year to keep track of them. So far I
haven't had to do anything major. You do have to be careful of excessive
bleeding and take care of your teeth! I had to have infusion therapy to
have a tooth pulled. Your mouth has so much bacteria it could get in your
bloodstream in case of tooth loss.

I have never had a history of low platets or blood clotting problems until
recently. 6 weeks post op, to the day, I had to have emergency gallbladder
surgery. After that surgery, I developed internal bleeding, improper blood
clotting and had to have a transfusion. I can't help but wonder if there is
any relation to WLS myself. I hope more people reply with their experiences
too.
