Question:
Does anyone know if ASSURANT-formerly Fortis, John Alden-covers WLS?
I have looked in the questions pages and there is nothing about Assurant at all. I would like to know if anyone has been approved with the individual plan. I have the opportunity to be covered by this insurance through my job, but I do not want to pay the premium if wls is not a covered benefit. I know that sounds bad, but we have four kids, and we are covered by my husband's Blue Cross. Thank you for reading this-hopefully someone has had approval. I suggest that you go to their website or call them instead of getting the
information second hand. JUst look for their clinical guidelines for
bariatric surgery. Or you could ask at work.

I read recently that someone in North Dakota, I believe, was denied WLS
under Fortis Insurance Company. The claimant sued the insurance company
and won their case. You'd think if the judgement was against them that
they would have to start including the WLS coverage for everyone. Does
anyone know anymore about this?

Sorry Michelle, I got the wrong Dakota! Fortis Insurance was successfully
sued (for denying WLS coverage) in Illinois in November 2004 and as of
January 2005 an appeal was pending against them in South Dakota Supreme
Court. I will email you a copy of the article. I think you might find it
interesting and/or helpful. I am currently fighting my insurance company
and I found this article during my research. Good luck to you in your
journey. - Catrina

I would say FORGET about ASSurant/Fortis they are fighting everyone who
tries to get any weight loss surgery. I'm currently using an attorney to
try to get WLS covered. If you have a choice -- JUST SAY NO!
(sadly you'd be better off to be completly indigent and on medicade.)
