Question:
Recommend good immediate post-op liquid diet?
I am confused about the liquid diet for the day you go home from the hospital. Can you recommend some good tasty ones and where to obtain them (like Wal-Mart)? I figure that those who have been there already can advise best! Patti Poor, Cartersville, GA — poorpatti (posted on September 29, 2009)

When you first come home, you'll probably be on a "clear" liquid
diet for at least a week or two, depending on your surgeon. I went to the
liquor store and bought a couple of packages of jell-0 shooter cups (little
plastic cups that hold exactly one ounce), and I had all my liquid
"diet" on hand and prepared before I went to the hospital,
including about 50 little containers of jell-o. In half of them, I mixed
unflavored protein powder with sugar-free jell-o as I stirred it, and then
later on, I would take the New Whey Protein Bullets and mix them in with
the cold water for the jell-o. So, you can have sugar-free jell-o, broth
(I preferred beef), sugar-free popsicles, Iso Pure Ready to Drink Protein
(you can get it at GNC and Vitamin Shoppe - it comes in fruit flavors, and
tastes kinda like adult koolaid). I also had Celestial Seasonings fruit
zinger teas with New Whey Protein Bullets mixed in - they gave the teas a
nice, zingy taste, and the warmth felt good on my pouch. You can also get
them at GNC and Vitamin Shoppe.

I was only on clear liquids for the 2nd day after surgery. After that, I
drank Vanilla EAS Protein Shakes. I live in Cartersville also and found the
EAS at Kroger, but the sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast can be found
at Wal-Mart.

I buy Wal-Mart's Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein (strawberry,
vanilla, chocolate) and make smoothies with it. I use one container of
low-fat (50 calories) yogurt (plain or flavored), 1 scoop of whey powder, a
handful of ice cubes, and enough zero calorie flavored water to help it
blend smooth. After I could eat more, I added a handful of frozen
strawberries to the mix. The whey powder alone is 52 grams of protein. They
also carry the super whey protein bullet (2.9 oz) which has 26 grams of
protein. I started with those immediately after surgery mixed with the zero
calorie flavored water as it is kind of like uncongealed gelatin when you
drink it alone. I sipped three of these a day with my water and got both my
protein and water requirements met. I still use both daily and had my
sleeve gastrectomy (by Dr. G. Alvarez in Mexico - the best), and have lost
57 pounds since 5/26/09. Also, this is the cheapest and best-tasting
protein that I've come across. I've had some much more expensive that I had
to throw down the drain they tasted so bad. Good luck!
