Question:
Hysterectomy and Weight Gain

I had Lap RNY on 2/21/08 and am down to 220 lbs. from 374 lbs. I am happy at this weight but recently found out that due to some very large uterine fibroids, I may need a hysterectomy. I am petrified that this would cause weight gain. Does anyone mind sharing their story with me if they had a similar experience? Did you gain weight? What changes did you experience if any? Where there any complications or side effects? I appreciate your responses. Have a great day all! Marion    — dsmuffin (posted on September 13, 2009)

I had RNY on 4/16/08 and weighed 380 down to 158 now. I had a hysterectomy 3 months ago.. I have not gained any weight back. But it only has been 3 months. But so far so good. I am on hormones which helps with the hot flashes..I just kept sticking with the way I ate since my surgery and everything is fine. Good luck.y

I had a hysterectomy 3 years before my surgery and did gain weight, I dont know if it was from the surgery or just my bad eating habits.

I had a hysterectomy last year after very heavy bleeding and a couple of fibroids. I was 8 years out from surgery. They didn't take my ovaries which I suppect would cause the weight gain you are afraid of. That is just my opinion. Good luck to you!

I had a complete hysterectomy 9 years ago where they took my ovaries and everything. I did gain weight and was unable to loose weight which is one of the reasons I choose to have the VSG surgery this last March. I have lost weight successfully since surgery and I wasn't able to prior. Using some form of natural homonal replacement is very helpful also if they don't take your ovaries it won't affect your weight as much. Since you have already had the surgery hopefully it won't affect you too much. I know I felt a great deal better after having my hysterectomy and don't miss the periods. I hope you continue to have great success.

The biggest thing about the surgery is if they are going to leave you overies... I had hysterectomy in June and they left my overies becuase the issue wasonly in my uterus. I am not on any medication and have not gained any weight.... PS... I feel like a new person.... no more pain etc. The only thing that I have to watch out for is the "munchies" that I get for no reason. If I recognize them I just ignore it...

Thank you everyone for your responses! I am still in the testing phase right now in regards to the hysterectomy. I'm assuming a decision will be made by the end of this month once all of my testing is complete. I'm sure I'll have more questions and I truly appreciate the wealth of experience you all bring to this forum! Have a great day!
