Question:
Scared Swallowed Gum
Today me and my family when on our summer vacation to the Grand Canyon and I was chewing some gum. "I know I don't usually chew gum however my ears was plugging up because of the elevation change". So I accidentaly swallowed the piece of gum about 8 hours ago. I have been able to still eat and drink with no problems. I still really scared though. Do you think I should be ok or do you think I should call my surgeon office? I had Lap RNY 6 months ago and it was a piece of surgar free Trident — roz_1 (posted on July 5, 2008)

I have swallowed gum twice with no problems. I am not worried, although I
have heard horror stories from others. While I don't think it is a good
idea as it could easily get stuck, I don't think there are any long term or
short term worries, unless you have pain, vomiting, etc. Still, do what you
feel is best for peace of mind.

If it blocked your pouch it would be giving you disconfort and you would be
grnerating a lot os saliva in the mouth and know it. I beleive that you
should be fine.

I did that also. Don't worry, you would know by now if you were going to
have problems. Get out there and enjoy your vacation!

My wife swallowed a piece of gun recetly she has a lap-band and she was
scared also. If You are OK go for it if you need adivise just check with
the Dr. However, if something strange starts to happen do not wait to get
it checked out.

I think if you can eat and drink as usual, you are ok. If your stoma was
blocked, you would most likely have pain and be sliming like crazy.
Enjoy your vacation,

My surgeon instructed me to NEVER chew gum. You should call your surgeon
and explain the situation. You may need intervention and not know it. You
shouldn't be afraid to tell your surgeon what you've done. I'm sure you're
not his first non-compliant patient.
