Question:
Abnormal EKG cancelled surgery date for now....
I went to my pre-op appointment at the hospital 2 days before my scheduled surgery and had my blood work done, a chest x ray and EKG done. When I got home, the nurse called and my Dr had cancelled the surgery until I have a full cardio work up and clearance. I dont have high chloesterol or blood pressure and no other known heart problems. A second EKG was also abnormal. I go to the cadriologist on the 8th. Any ideas what this could be???? — Blonde_Sanchez (posted on August 4, 2007)

You didn't say what was wrong with you EKG other than abnormal. Really
can't say what it is, it could be a million different things, and sometimes
when tests are taken further, it could be what they call a
"false-positive" meaning that there is nothing wrong and your
EKG is just abnormal. GOod luck

this could mean anything I had this to. They will probally do a stress test
to clear you.

I wouldn't stress to much about it. I went to a Cardiac doctor that I used
to work with on Friday for my EKG (because my Insurance said they needed
one). So we did the EKG and mine said the same thing abnormal. My doctor
stated that just because mine came back abnormal doesn't mean there is
anything wrong. Its just that everyone is different so what is normal for
me might not be "normal" for the EKG results. So I went a head
and did a echocardiogram and a stress test since I was there. Even though
the tech's shouldn't say anything, but they did anyway since we knew each
other (most of the time they will tell you if you ask) they told me that
everything thing looks great they see nothing wrong what's so ever. They
said the EKG come back abnormal for many reasons. So I wouldn't stress to
much about it. They will run some more test and then you will know for sure
its better to be safe then sorry. I wish you the best of luck and please
keep us up to date. :)

As a cardiology nurse this could mean a 100 things or it could be nothing.
It could be something that you have always had. I agree that you will
probably need a stress test, this will give the doctor a clear picture of
what is going on, nothing to worry about, an easy test. There is a WLS
practice in the hospital where i work and most if not all patients require
this and pass, so dont worry about it right now, see the doctor and have it
done, better to have a clean workup, less chance of a problem later, they
all err on the side of caution but that is for your benefit, best of luck I
know you will do well.

The exact same thing happened to me 5 days before my scheduled
surgery...RNY. I had to see a cardiologist and took him a copy of my EKG
that was "abnormal". He said........you know what is wrong with
this EKG? I said, No. He said....the people reading it, but we will do
another one for your doctor. I had my EKG done in the pre-op at the
hospital. She did not have me lie down, remove any jewelry, and did not
clean the site with alcohol or anything. I do NOT know if this would have
made a difference. I only know that the cardiologist did these things and
it turned out to me normal. I had my surgery one week later than planned. I
am 4 mos out and have lost 73 lbs. I am within 47 lbs of my ultimate goal
and soooooooo happy.Good luck to you.

I, too, had an abnormal EKG during my pre-op exam. A follow-up at the
Cardiologist's office had the same result. He performed an ultrasound and
found my heart to be healthy and I was able to continue with the surgery.
How disappointing for you. I was worried, too, and it turned out to be
fine. Could medication be causing the irregularity?
