Question:
I am 61 ys. old. I will be 62 in Aug. Is there and age limit for lap band surgery?
I am retired now. I have always struggled with my weight since childhood. I started dieting seriously after I graduated from college. I am 5ft.4in. and I weigh 195. Last year I lost about 40 lbs. but as usual I am gaining it back. My knees are bad as a result of the extra weight and arthuritus. I am active and young at heart. I golf and do water arobics. Also please tell me how much the lap band surgery actually cost, please. — Bosslady (posted on December 17, 2006)

I had lap band surgery in November and I am 61 also. Doctors will consider
people up to 65 years old. I have arthritis and had a back operation 2
years ago. I am hoping that losing my extra 100 lbs will help my health.
Your bmi (body mass index) has to be around 40 to be considered for
surgery. It can be a bit lower if you have medical problems like diabetes,
high blood pressure, joint problems, heart conditions, etc. You can find
out how to calculate it on the web. Good luck with weight control.

You should be fine age wise on getting the adjustable lap band surgery,
research surgeon's find one you are comfortable with and schedule an appt.
If I recall correctly for the lap band surgery you don't have to MO if you
are a self pay, if you have other health problems. My husband is a cash
pay lap band patient, the cost for his surgery was $15,000 and each fill is
$150. Hope this helps, best wishes ~~ Dana

You don't seem heavy enough for the surgery, to be honest.

As far as age goes, it depends on your dr. I had an attempt for lap band
surgery and ended up with a colostomy. It was reversed later. I had had
several abdominal surgeries in my lifetime and thats pretty much why it
ended up that way. I am now 65 yrs old, had rny last April, had no
problems. I am also 5'4", but weighed 260. I love it!!! Have lost
around 70 lbs and still losing slowly, which is the way I like it.

Lap Band may seem like the easy way out and maybe it's cheaper, I don't
know. I do know I am 65 yrs. old and had the gastric bypass surgery last
July. I wanted to do it before I was 65 :-)
Since July I have lost 92 lbs. and I feel great. Do your research before
you decide on lap band. I have heard that many have problems with it.
It's your decision of course. If you retire at 62, Medicare pays for all
obesity surgery, but you must go to a hospital that has a Certificate of
Excellence, therefore you need to research that and discover which doctors
are affiliated with those hospitals. I was lucky and found one only 80
miles from home. My complete surgery cost me about $47.00. Medicare paid
the rest.
