Question:
8 months out and not loosing
I had surgery in October 2005 and had lost 99 pounds. But in the last month I haven't lost anything infact I have gained 6 pounds back. Has any one else had this happen. I know what I need to do but am not motivated to do it. I don't exercise and don't eat the way I should. — jengriggs01 (posted on June 26, 2006)

I think you have answered your own questions. There are 3 absolutes you
have to do. EAT, DRINK and EXCERCIZE. If you don't eat properly then you
will not lose weight and in most cases you will gain. It would be in your
best behave is to start over with the basics, and get back on track. You
should also consider going to regular support meetings. You need to be
around others who are successful and this will encourage you to continue.
Good luck

Yes, that is the answer. You have endured pain, time, and digestive track
changes. You have to do all thoses thing you learned about WLS every day,
for the rest of your life. Please take care of yourself and do not for get
vitamins, since your body is eating up your reserves.

Hmmm....perhaps you are asking this question to get some motivation or
maybe a little kick in the behind ;-). It sounds to me like you thought you
could exist and not follow the rules and do whatever you want tand the
weight would just fall off. Well maybe for a very small select few that
works....But for the rest of us WRONG!!!! Try to remind yourself why you
had surgery to begin with... for your health... that should be a
motivation. Here comes the oh so true cliche....this is a tool... you must
eat healthy and exercise and you will lose again. You must eat healthy and
exercise to maintain for years to come. You said it yourself.... you know
what you need to do ...there is no easy way... DO IT!!!! You can isn't the
99 lbs great motivation for you? Isn't feeling better about yourself
motivation? You cna do this.... you must do this or the 99 lbs will not
stay off either. Good luck to you!!!

I don't think you are really looking for a lecture because those can be had
just about anywhere. What I think you are looking for is the answer as to
why you aren't motivated and looking for a key. We all know what the
answer is, but how do you find that sweet spot? When do you start to want
it bad enough to do it? Each person has their own sweet spot, so you need
to look to yourself to answer those questions. Perhaps just looking in the
mirror and seeing a new you. Perhaps you need a new hairstyle, new
clothing, new make up. One thing I am getting from you is that you may not
be happy. Sometimes this surgery can bring about a sort of depression when
you peel away some of the fat and start to realize some things about your
life that you buried. Here is the thing: The answers lie within yourself
and you have the power to stir up the desire, but you have to do some work.
Moreso than a support group, I suggest finding a great counselor...one
you click with. They are worth their weight in gold and can help you find
what has you down. If you can find that key, you can face it head on and
figure out how to tackle the problem and move on. Once you've faced it and
deal with it, you might find that the motivation just comes to you. Good
luck and I do hope that you find your sweet spot soon. Dina

Its me again. Just a little more background on myself. I guess I am
looking for support and a kick in the butt. About a month after surgery I
moved from MA to KY and haven't seen a doctor since October. I also
haven't been to a supprt group meeting since then either. I have also
recently stopped taking Prozac because I was thinking I could live without
it but now I'm thinking that I should start taking it again. I was feeling
soo good going from a size 24 to a 16 and now I'm getting all depressed
again. And it doesn't help that my husband of 5 years and I are constantly
having problems. I moved back to MA a month ago and am going to go to a
meeting tommorrow night. I am also going to make a doctors appoinment as
soon as my insurance kicks in on July 5th. Thanks for all your help.

I stopped losing at 8 months. I am 4 yrs post op now, regained about 15
lbs, thankfully no more than that. I will say that my exercise commitment
has always been minimal at best. On a couple occassions I would try to
exercise regularly drop a couple of lbs but as soon as I stopped I would
gain them back. I think there is truth in the fact that our bodies go into
starvation mode because we loose the 1st 8 months or so very quickly.
After that our metabolism slows to try to hold on to every lb we have, even
if we still have more we want to lose. Muscle burns more calories than
fat, so one of the keys to restart the loss is to balance your exercise
between aerobic and strength training. The good news is that you dont have
to run 10 miles a week to see results. You can see good results with 4/30
minute brisk walks a week combined with weight training every other day for
at least 20 minutes. You need to know start looking at the long haul,
where do you want to be 2,3,4 years out. 99 lbs is a great loss, but can
you be happy if you never lose another lb? If not, you know what you have
to do, because it isn't going to come off on it's own. There is no end to
the process, you will have to work at this for the rest of your life. WLS
is a great tool. Without WLS, every other dieting attempt resulted in me
gaining all the weight back and then some usually in less than a year.
Maintaining 100 lb loss for 4 years has been a great accomplishment. Do I
think I can lose more if I try harder, I'm pretty certain I can and you can
too. Good Luck!

Everyone hits plateaus. I also gained a ffew pounds back, and I was doing
what I was supposed to do! Then I lost again. I think your body needs to
rest after lsoing lots of weight. My husband says that my body is shifting
weight around, LOL.
Anyway, that does not absolve you of the responsibility for taking carre of
yourself! You have come so far; don't give up!

As much as I hate to respond, some of us never reach our goal for unknown
reasons. I cannot explain and I resent anyone who thinks they know why
100% if the time.

I had surgery in October of 2002, and I stopped losing - and I mean dead
stop - at 8 months out. I was eating right, exercising and was probably in
the best health in my life. I was going by the book, to the letter - water,
protein, exercise, etc. I even had my basal metabolic rate tested and to
maintain my weight, I supposedly could eat 1600 calories a day! I not
eating anywhere near that, as I was still keeping food journals at that
time. HAHAHAHA! I never lost the last 40 lbs I wanted to lose, but I have
maintained. I have really slacked off on the exercise, but I work two jobs
and have a house and yard and pets to take care of. I suppose I could give
up some of the 6 hours of sleep I get so I could exercise!
I have come to the conclusion that my body is just meant to be at the
weight I am. I am healthy and have not gained, so I figure I am doing okay.
I suppose I could starve myself to lose the last of the weight, but I am
not into doing that stuff anymore.
