Question:
How Have you Been able to maintain your Weight Loss after Surgery if on steroids?

(I am asking this on behalf of a friend who does not have a computer.) My friend had RNY 10 years ago, and this 2 weeks ago, she had a revision done. She gained a lot of weight back due in part to the steroids her Dr. has her on for her Degenerative Disc Disease. She says that she does not want all her hard work to go down the drain because of her steroids. She will work to eat/snack healthy and maintain regular exercise, but she is worried the Steriods will "Blow her up" again. Please provide any helpful information that I may be able to pass on to her. Feel free to message me as well. Thanks!    — DeShanna C. (posted on November 14, 2009)

Enter the keyphrase "weight loss on steroids" in the SEARCH box at the top of this page, and you'll find a number of different experiences. God bless.

I think that this is a question that your friend should be asking her surgeon . He will monitor her as well as the perscribing doctor will. There will be perhaps a different approch to the steroids administration in light of her having had the gastric surgery twice. Again this is a question that she should be asking her doctor not so much that the sites would not give her the correct information but losts of conflicting information and thus confusing the question more than need be. Not everyone's body reacts the same to steriods. Not forgetting the dosages might not be the same for everyone and this seems to be omited in these on line suggestions. As well as any other medications that that indivisual is currently on and their past experiance with stress related weight gain due to water retention. Have her consult with her doctor and have a list of questions ready for him. Tell her don't be afraid to make several apointments if she dosen't get the answers that she is comfortable in her understanding with. Hope that this helps.

Having Rheumatoid arthritis and being on prednisone and methotrexate as well as other arthritis meds was and still is hard for me to not want to eat all the time. Every 30 minutes or so I am wanting to eat something. I do not like meat at all since having wls, but will eat potted meats and some beef or prok if it is cooked until fallen apart or mushy. Veggies is what i mostly eat and they I consider to be slider foods. They go down easy, fill me up fast and does not make me feel so uncomfortable and guilty feeling after I eat them. Raw veggies makes me dump and sugar content foods of 7 grams or more makes me dump also. My lowest weight after getting the flu in 2005 was 194 lbs. I now weigh 263.5 lbs. My surgeon my last visit 5 months ago told me that it was going to be very hard for me to not gain any weight without being off the meds. I have severe RA and do not do well off prednisone or RA meds without being unable to mobile or pain free. I do everything in moderation and do not over do things to cause flares as often. I walk everyday. I was 352 lbs. when I started my journey with wls and 326 the day of my surgery. I was told several times it would be hard to keep the weight off with the RA meds and but this surgery I believed saved my life. I have a lot of lose skin all over and a panni hanging 6-1/2 inches long. I would do it all over again if I had to and wearing smaller sizes is wonderful. I just wish that I was medicine free and not have RA. WLS was the best thing that I have ever done for myself. Ms Pisces
