Question:
Anyone had success with lap band surgery with a BMI over 50?

I am considering WLS and have done nine months of research on lap band as that is the surgery I believe would fit my lifestyle the best. After my appointment today my Dr. informed me that he strongly suggests I do the bypass because of my bmi. I am curious to see what others results have been.    — harmonysplace (posted on August 20, 2009)

The lap band is a very slow weight loss and a lot of excercise. I have a chart that you will find helpful. If you go to www.lapsf.com on the left side blue box click "Weight Loss & Revisional Surgeries" then click "Intro-What Are My Options" Scroll down to where you see the picture of a stomach. Click here to view the "Surgery Comparison Chart". Print this email so you can follow my directions. This chart is great. It shows you all of the surgeries, etc. Hope this helps.

Hi Jodi, I had RNY...choice that was correct for me..made with my DR & I together. It worked very well..lost 130lbs so far. On the other hand I have seen to people that I have followed with them having Lap band..the first did extremly well losing close to 200 lbs and is keeping it of very well. On the other hand the second lost only a small amount of weight...30lbs. One worked at her goal and used her TOOL well..the other didnt work at it and did not use her tool. You have to truly sit your self down and be HONEST with yourself as to how well YOU will follow the need for protein, drinking, and eating when and what you need to. Then there is the excerise.. Each of us knows what we will follow and IF you are able to choose which surg. then weigh everything with your DR's help and make your choice work for YOU! I wish you the best in YOUR choice.

I am 1 week post lap band surgery and my BMI is 52. I have 125 pounds to lose. I went to my first information session and Dr consultation with my mind already made up to have lap band surgery. Both the Dr & the psycologist supported my decision. I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing. So far I've been doing very well. It has only been one week but I've had no problems and feel great.

I have lost 77 lbs in 9 months with the Relize band. I don't do a lot of exercise but I do walk. Getting the band was the best thing for me.

You may want to consider Vertical Sleeve. I originally wanted the band and my doctors told me about the VSG and how it is a great alternative and has the least amount of complications. I had mine 5 months ago and have lost 75 lbs. I agree with the previous poster that you need to check all of your options. I hope you have great success.

I, too, had the sleeve 5 1/2 months ago, with a bmi of 55. I'm down 109 now. It is restrictive, but not mal-absorbtive. You don't have to keep going in for fills. The part of the stomach that is left in place is much more resistant to stretching than a pouch. I can (now) swallow pills. It's a great deal. Check it out! (But a word of warning: do not go into this thinking it is a magic bullet. I have to keep my carbs below about 20-25 to keep loosing. I am working with my pastor on addictive behavior to change what got me here in the first place. Eventually, I'm going to have to start REAL exercise.) God bless you on your journey.

You know for me, I chose not to do the band because I have more than 80 lbs to lose and I need something that will work for me even if I fall off. I looked at the band as being another Jenny Craig type diet which I worked really hard at for over 8 months and only lost 5 lbs! I am sure that there are many successful banders out there but I am being honest with myself and I do not want to come back in a year saying I need another surgery! If I need to lose 80 or less lbs I would have chose the band, 200 or more DS, but I am confident in the RNY because I now have type 2 diabetes and this is what I am trying to reverse! Good luck with your decision and make sure whatever it is you chose, IT'S your decision!!

I too had my mind set on getting the band, I didnt really look at other options too much because that is how much I thought I knew what I wanted. Until meeting my amazing surgeon, my bmi was over 50 and although he would have done what I wanted he strongly recommended RNY or the sleeve. I trusted him so much that I went home and researched all my options and by the end of the night I knew my answer. I had my RNY 7 months ago and have lost over 100lbs. Im so happy I looked at my options!! Good luck!!

I honestly know of some people who have the band, and they haven't lost anything, they are opting to have the RNY now. I myself thought of the band until you are not restricted from eating anything that is high in fat, those foods are my weekness. Even though I have a BMI of 41, I think that RNY is my best solution to lose the weight and teach me to eat the right foods. If you have a sweet tooth or like high fat foods I strongly suggest RNY, just because you will be restricted from the foods that do cause weight gain.

I had the VG. I read Lap Bands can "slip" and cause bowel obstructions. Thats surgery to have the band removed..and the idea of a foreign body inside of me.. no thank you. The idea of going in for fills didn't appeal to me. Who has time for that? There are many people in my support group thou who love their band. They have lost alot of weight meaning 100 to 150lbs. If you decide to do it aren't happen you can always have it removed.

I got my lap band on April 1st 2009. I have only lost 30 lbs in 5 months, but because is is the least evasive surgery it was the right decision for me even with slow weight loss. The fills take 5 minutes, once a month until you get to you ideal fill. It is no different than seeing your doctor, and does not hurt. I had my surgery and was back to work in 3 days. Have had no problems, just wish I'd loose faster, but everyone I have talked to says give it time. My BMI was 51. Good luck with what ever you decide.

I weighted 303 when I had my lap-band. I have lost 118 lbs so far. It was the least invasive and best solution for me. I even chose to not use a Dr. thatisnsisted anone having over 100 lbs to loose he would never do the band (to closed minded for me). I am a bulk eater, I still egt the full feeling I need with much less food. If I had been a high sugar/carb eater I might have considered a by-pass instead
