Question:
Why am I having nausea and have not eaten yet?

I am 31/2 wkkes post op and everyday I am nauseated. At first I thought it was because I ate to fast, now I'm nauseated even when I don't eat. Even drinking a sip of water makes me want to vomit. This has me a worried. I have lost almost 40 pounds and I'm glad of that, but I don't want to become malnourished. Can anyone give me some advise?...    — Jorga456 (posted on December 11, 2008)

It's always good advice to consult with your doctor. In the meantime, take your vitamins and minerals as recommended, focus on the protein foods, avoid fat, vegetable skins and starches like pasta. For nausea, you might nibble on a couple of saltine crackers or try Nausene or dramamine. I hope this helps, but please do check with your doctor. @};- Dusty

Water makes a lot of people sick to their stomaches. You might want to go back to broth and popcicles to keep from dehydrating. Check with your doctor.

After your surgery you can have nausea for approx. 3 months. It is very common according to my surgeon. I am 3 months out and it is finally getting better. Less and less nausea each day. Everyday is different. Sometimes I get nauseated after taking my pills in the morning. Sometimes I need to force myself to eat. According to my doctor this is all normal. But I am still monitored by the weight loss center every 1 2/2 months and have lab work at all visits. Water has also been a problem for me. Cold water is really bad for me. They told me to drink warm liquids and I find it helping with the nausea.

You need to see your surgeon right away. My surgeon and his staff said nausea is not normal; if someone tells you it is and you're fine, they are wrong.

I definitely feel for you. I am just under 3 months out of RNY and have lost 71 lbs so far. Anyways, I have been dealing with severe nausea for 2 months now. I went to my surgeon to see him about it and he thought that I probably had a stricture. Well he did an endoscopy and found that I had a very small stricture, and he fixed it. But that never stopped my nausea. I was given a medicine to rub on my wrist about half an hour before I eat. It is a medicine for nausea, but, I do not think it has made much difference at all. So in my case, I was finally told after all of that, that I am going through a phase. So far it has been a very long phase and I am totally sick of it and it is very depressing. Just about any food I either look at, think about or taste completely turns my stomach. If I eat it, it comes right back up. I have never thrown up so much in my life. The only things I can keep in me right now are tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, popcorn and homemade soups. The only liquid I can keep in me is lemonade crystal light too. I cannot even think about canned soup. They have to be homemade and with no meat. So I have made up tons of veggie soups and have them frozen in individual dishes so I can eat when I am ready. I would say this is what you are going through. An unfortunate sucky phase that does not affect everyone, but some, such as myself. The best thing to do is to consult your physician, and who knows, maybe they can give you this medicine to put on your wrist and it just might work for you, although it does not for me. We are all different and our bodies react to everything and all meds differently. No one is the same. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you can get over this quicker than I have so far. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to message me on my page.

When I had my original RNY I was nauseated for 1 year after surgery. I thought it would never end. I would call my doctor and let him know what is going on asap. I want to mention when I drink alot of water it makes me very nauseated. Remember to sip water and not gulp it. I tend to gulp myself. I was on anti nauesa meds for over 1 year. Please call your doctor. Conrads on your surgery.

First of all, call your surgeon right away. A number of things could be wrong. With that being said, don't forget water and protein are the two most important things for you right now. Try to get as much as you can of both. I had problems with water and then, I discovered that crystal light seemed to help. It comes in many flavors. Good luck.

Yes. Go and see your doctor. Don't ever think twice about that. If something isn't right or doesn't feel right - better safe than sorry. Personally, I feel sick to my stomach on and off. I go can go weeks and some times months w/o feeling sick and then I will feel sick for a month. Doc has run tests and I am fine (on paper). All of my vitamin levels and labs are PERFECT (in fact they whited out my name and used it in support group as an example of what to do). My PCP prescribed me some medication to help when I do feel sick to my stomach - I take it when I need it and it helps. I will be 2 years out in Feb 09 - LAP RNY. Good luck.

I would call your surgeons office today. I have not had my surgery yet, but I just saw the nutritionist. She said that if you are nauseated all the time you should get in touch with your doctor.
