Question:
2 hour glucose post op question
My pcp wants to do a 2 hour glucose study on me. I am post op and in major pain if I ingest more than 20g of sugar. (I have done this by accident before...never again!) I mean it feels like I am dying of a Heart Attack..almost like a Gallbladder attack. I am more scared of this test than my open RNY surgery. Not only that i am afraid of my sugar levels. I have major hi an low swings. ex: High 350 2hours later 42 and that is after a regular meal...not tons of sugar. I am scared to death that I am going to have a bad reaction. Any insights from anyone else who has had this test post-op? BTW from my regular blood tests they say I am not diabetic....are these even accurate on us post op? Should I request this test be done in the hospital to be safe? — hooterzgirl75 (posted on November 28, 2006)

Why would your doctor want to do a glucose test on you. I would say no and
opt of ra fasting glucose instead. The standard glucose test wouldn't be
accurate on us anyway because of the way it affects us. Personally anything
over 6 grams has me dumping. So there is NO WAY I would ever consent to
one of those. There are other ways they can keep an eye on your sugars.
Just remember they can't force you into anything so don't let them think
they can. there are always alternative procedures they can do.

I'd say your surgeon will be able to give you answers to any and all
questions.

original poster here. My surgeons office says it is ok. But, they dont
have to go through it. My pcp wants this test because I have dangerous
blood sugar fluctuations that have been very difficult to deal with. I am
more sensitive to the swings and have a lot of difficulty controlling them.
Unfortunately, my warning system is failing due to so many of these
episodes. I can be hypoglycemic and not know until I hit a dangerously low
level....and have no symptoms at all..other than a bit of a
"hazy" feeling. My pcp has tried other tests but still cant
account for these issues. That is whey he wants to do this. I am desperate
for a reason...and hopefully a solution. A huge concern is that this
solution contains 100g of sugar...so scared.

I used to work at a hospital in the lab and a few people had this test
done. Some can tolerate it and some can not.
Personally I would ask could they not find out another way.
Who is doing the testing?
Are they prepared to deal with a person who has had the surgery and is it
being done in a local office?
I would have my PC doctor speak with my surgeon on what to look for and any
possible reactions.

Are you having this done because you are pregnant? My OB wanted to do this
test on me when I was pregnant to test for gestational diabetes. I said
"No Way!" because I dump when I eat to much sugar. Instead they
did a fasting glucose test, where I just fasted overnight and they tested
my blood sugar. It's up to you what you want to do. You can always say no
to anything tests your dr. wants to do. Becky

Lynn, I wouldn't go through that test either and you have the right to
refuse it. If your PCP want's to track your bg during the day then he/she
can have you wear a continuous glucose monitor system (CGMS) for 2 -3 days.
Most endocrinologist can hook you up with one of these.

Thank You for all of the responses so far. I am not pregnant. Doc wants the
test because all other tests have come out inconclusive. I am so ill all
the time I just want answers. I am lucky if I feel decent one day out of a
week. I will run the continuous monitor idea by him...from what I have read
it is not done that often. I am scheduled to have this done Friday. If I go
through with it I will be sure to post and let you all know how it went so
others know what to expect...even though everyone may be different. That is
if I live...just kidding.

Lynn go online and look up gastric bypass hypoglycemia-apparently some of
us (me included) have rapid drops in our glucose after eating something too
sweet (this is not always the case) it can also be from not eating frequent
enough. In my case I drank a lemonade on a hot day that I thought was
sugar free and wasn't. after about 30 minutes it caused my sugar level to
drop-I got jittery, hot and slightly confused-you then have to actually eat
or drink something with sugar to get it to come back to a normal level.
Please look this up online it can explain it so much better. I am seen at
the Mayo Clinic and my doctor had me get a insulin glucose monitoring set
to keep track of when this happens and what I'm at (usually I drop to
around 47). Fortunately for me it doesn't happen that often.
