Question:
Milk/Whey intolerant, also soy intolerant - HELP PLease

I have a friend who is not only dairy/lactose intolerant, she is also soy intolerant as well. Her only options for getting enough protein and nutrients seem to be rice protein powder and hemp protein powder, but apparently they taste awful. She also has to watch the sugar content of anything she eats. Does anyone have any suggestions for her, nutrionally?    — Erica Alikchihoo (posted on January 29, 2009)

I am also dairy/lactose intolerant. I use a whey protein isolate, Syntrax nectar protein powder, it is mixed with water and comes in many different flavors. There is no sugar and I believe only 60 calories and 23 grams of protein per shake. This is the best one that I have found that I can tolerate. I would recommend trying it.

There is an egg white protien powder and it tastes good. they have plain, chocolate and vanilla. I saw it at Nutrition Works. JayRob I think? A lean and muscular man on the container. I prefer it over all other stuff but go with soy cos it is cheaper LOL Give it a whirl and see what happens.

My surgeon won't let us drink our calories, so we are not allowed to drink protein drinks. I have had no problems, I eat meat, fish, eggs, cheese and veggies. My labs come back perfect each time. Good luck, it can be done without protein drinks.

There are egg proteins as I have heard...I don't know of any brands or where to buy them...But I have heard of them as an alternative to some who have these issues. She might do really well on some good probiotics... I would have her ask her doc to recommend a good one to use...There are so many out there and I have luck with most that I tried...But I'm sure as with all things there are ones that are better than others! I use lactaid milk and it's been awesome...I have no trouble with it at all...I also have luck with SOME high quality whey "ISOLATE"...She may find that after some time she will be able to tolerate a little more of some things later...That has been the case with me... I can tolerate much more than before...I eat my protein now...but I still use supplements as well for breakfast to stay way from carbs and sugar in the morning!

I have those very same issues: lactose intolerant and I have to try and avoid soy due to my hypothyroid medicine. Have her try Lactaid milk ---no soy, tastes great, comes in skim and whole milk varieties. And for lots of liquid protein, try Isopure drinks found at the Vitamin Shoppe or other health food places. Isopure has 40 grams protein, no soy, no lactose, lots of flavors, comes in pre-mixed bottles and tastes like flavored water. The Isopure is derived from ion exchange whey (milk)protein but since it is lactose free I have no problem with it. Just after lap band surgery when I was on Atkins for 3 days -- only thing I could find-- I was miserable because it was milk (whey) protein with lactose included. The Isopure is like night and day compared to the Atkins. I sip an Isopure throughout the work day to make sure I get in some of my water and protein between eating the small meals. Hope these ideas help. Good luck!

How about Acidophilus Milk. It is for dairy, lactose intolerant, and soy intolerant as well. My oldest daughter is like this. She still drinks the milk as an adult. Can she tolerate whey? Wheat? Perhaps she should see the docs and ask. But that may be best-perhaps she should be checked for celiac's disease. Good Luck and God Bless, vinnigirl, retired RN

I have the same issues. What I did was use the chocolate flavored Rice protein powder, mix it with either almonds or peanut butter, and a frozen banana and made a smoothie in a blender. I would mix it with an artificial sweetener such as sucralose (I am sensitive to Aspartame and allergic to sugar, which means that I cannot use splenda either). This seemed to work WELL for me. I actually LIKED this combination. I would drink TWO of these smoothies a day to get my recommended protein.
