Question:
No will to eat at all!!
I have been having a problem for a few weeks. I don't want to be bothered to eat. Most of the time it hurts to eat and I have been over and over this with my doctor and nut with no results. Nothing tastes good anymore. I am so picky and am never hungry. I have lost 75lbs since 9/08 and am happy but I throw up alot and I guess my mind is starting to associate food with pain and I don't want it. I have been on several medications to help digestion with no results. Any advise would be great. Thanks and God bless!! — hannahsmom1014 (posted on January 21, 2009)

It sounds like a stricture or an ulcer. Have they done a scope to see what
is going on. I had both and once they fixed it I could eat again. It took a
few months to heal.

Hi Robyn, I had RNY in Dec '08 and I am having similar issues. In the
beginning I was rarely getting ill and was surprised at how much I could
eat without issues. More recently I have been having problems. I now
think that it could be the Prevacid that the doc told me to start taking
again. My husband thinks that I am not producing enough stomach acid for
the medication to work. Are you on any sort of anti-acid med? If so, this
might be your issue. Starting tomorrow, I'm going to try and see what
happens when I go off of the Prevacid. Anyway, just a thought! Best of
luck to you!

Hi Great Job on the weightloss
I wanted to share, in the beginning I was the same and at times I felt that
I was making myself sick every time I would eat I would throw up to the
point I did not want to eat really I had to get mental on this I felt I was
making my self sick just thinking that it might happen when I ate. I just
really had to take my eating time serious and my time. I had to think eat
slow stop before getting full I even had spit out a bite cause I thought it
might make me sick if I swallowed it,

I really had to think and eat 1 0r 2 bites and be done many too many yuks
in the bathroom. Not sure if this is the same problem u have but really
making your eating time your time and getting mental with your food may
help. I hope you get better, things have gotten better for me and hardly
ever visit the bathroom now, Just thinking I was going to eat made me sick
Take care Tammi

I didn't have a wonderful time eating either..I didn't vomit though, but I
always felt "icky" after I ate...I had open RNY and it took
forever to heal! I didn;t think I;d ever stop having some pain. But I
guess the trade off was enough for me to push on...I learned about
probiotics and started taking htem and WOW...what a difference! They helped
a lot with the gut aches! All I can say is try to eat even when you don't
want to...and don;t be too picky...keep trying different foods! One day
they hurt or taste bad..the next day they don't! It's weird! Then suddenly
it just gets better...There is an end...It does get better...but you need
to stay healthy! So you must eat and take your vits with food...Vits KILLED
pouched! I had to chew them just after a meal so it didn't burn or ache as
much...hang in there...I think I finally began to enjoy the taste of food
again at 6 months...and by a year I was enjoying more meals than not...At
year two my hunger came back and I began to totally enjoy food...and
now...You'd never know I had the surgery by watching me eat! LOL I love
everything...Even fish which I HATED all my life! Good luck! Just
know...it gets better!

Robyn, you need to eat. If the dr doesn't think there is an issue
physically...stricture etc, then you need to eat , cuz your body needs to
relearn to do everything it did before. even if you are able to eat just a
bite or two, please do it. In the beginning I was only eating twice a day.
Try that. wait the 5 mins between bites. eat very soft stuff...cottage
cheese, mashed taters, whatever sounds good...yogurt maybe.but you don't
want to sabbatoge your surgery and you do have to eat. For me, eating is
about necessity and not pleasure anymore...sounds like you too, but you do
need the food. it was more of a bother than anything. I had a hard time
getting fluids in and eating was a chore, but I did and now I am 14 pounds
from goal weight. It has taken me 7 months, but i feel good. Good luck to
you and God Bless! hugs,kim

I went through this for about 2 weeks recently (Surg. 12/15/08). I was
beginning to think I had a stricture too. Throwing up a lot, stomach ache
drinking water or shake. Nothing helped except tea or broth. The only other
thing I could keep down was yogurt...most of the time.
I decided to go back to liquids for a couple of days and not even try
moist-soft foods, which weren't working anyway. Well, low and behold, it
gave my stomach a rest. Suddenly I could drink water (even cold water)
without crampiness. I could eat several things and keep them down. Even new
things were going well.
Maybe the pouch gets irritated and as we keep trying to pushes more and
more at it it gets worse. I've very pleased that things are turning around
now and I'm not afraid to put something in my mouth anymore.

In my opinion, I would much prefer treating the problem and not medicating
the symptoms. If you get rid of what is causing the pain, then you won't
have the pain. A stricture, an ulcer, many different reasons we can have
pain after WLS and it is not normal. Pain is the body's way of signaling
us that something is wrong. Please insist that your surgeon does whatever
he has to do to diganose and treat the problem asap. Have you had an
endoscopy, swallowing study, EGD or any of the like? Have you been tested
for c. diff? Be your own best advocate and remember, he works for you.
Insist on finding out what's wrong and get better soon.

I am 10 months post op and to this day I have to make myself eat. Make your
meals (if you want to call them that lol) last at least 30 minutes. The
food that you put in your mouth should be the size of the end of an eraser.
Take your time to eat. I do this and I still would rather not eat. Food
now is a matter of living and its not for pleasure anymore. Good luck.
