Question:
LIFE INSURANCE POLICY-was denied because of surgery
I tried to get a policy (have a husband and young children) and they denied me because of my Lap Band Surgery, that is bullcrap. Has anyone else every experience this? i mean i thougt because the surgery is approved in the US the should not be able to deny you, right or am i crazy? — jordanty (posted on October 16, 2008)

You are absolutely right. Not only can you not get life insurance, but you
also cannot get a disability policy such as Aflac!!!!!

The year after I had My gastric Bypass (oct 2004) I closed on my first
home.(the junker it is) When they put in the loan the life insurance to pay
off incase i passed the bank put in about my gastric bypass and the policy
was denied. Two years later I redid my mortgage ( had two put in one) they
redid the Life insurance policy this time it wasn't denied because of the
gastric bypass it was denied because of My gallbladder removal. My Loan
officer called the company and asked them what the big deal was and She was
told that Life insurqance policies (with them) are automatically denied if
there has been ANY surgeries in the past Year. She also was told that if I
redid my mortgage again in a couple years and had no more surgeries I
should have no problem being covered. So I don't think it is becuase it is
Gastric Bypass persay but just major ssurgery in general. Best Wishes Linda

I had a gastric bypass in 1997 and I could always get life insurance and
short and long term diasablity. I have been on long term disablity several
times and got paid since 1997.

I tried last spring and I was told that I had to be 5 years post op to
recieve a policy but that I could get one at a MUCH higher premium for
now...I figured I'd wait a year...It's about that time to try again...They
drw blood and everything and then they learned I had RNY and that was the
end of that!

Shannon you can get coverage. Ask for a guarenteed issue policy. They are
a bit pricey but you can get it.

I just want to say thanks for everything...I did find out answers to my own
question which i thing might be helpful to all of you as well: i spoke with
AIG (which was the company we initially went through) and their policy is 3
years post opp until you can get covered...but the guy from AIG, who by the
way was extremely helpful, said PRUDENTIAL LIFE INS is the best ins co to
go through because there waiting period for biartric surgery is only 12
MONTHS....hope this helps all of you. He also said in the mean time you can
at least get accidental ins which is up to 500,000 and about 10 dollars per
every 100,000...kinda like a bandaid until you get coverage....THANKS
GUYS>>>>
