Question:
Hey guys -- I'd like to have a glass of wine.
Hi there everyone! In the first week of May, I'm coordinating a Sales Conference in California. On the first night, we're having a lovely dinner, at a place with an extensive wine list. This wine list has a really rare wine, and this may be my only chance to try it - ever! I'll be just over 3 months out, and while I doubt I'd even drink the entire glass (baby sips!), I want to know if you think the acid content in 2-3oz of wine will make the pouch AAANNNGRY. Lord knows we don't want that. I've got two co-workers at the ready, as well, who have supported me through this process, and they said if I get loopy on 2oz wine, they'd make sure I didn't get silly or anything -- but primarily, I want to be sure I don't hurt the pouchy. Any recommendations? — crydecker (posted on April 3, 2008)

You should be fine. I actually didnt drink for 2 yrs after my surgery but I
know people who did. I doubt it will aggravate the pouch just make sure you
eat a littlesomething first. Have fun

I am two years post-op and I can't drink ANY kind of alcohol. On only one
sip, I get a horrible tummy ache and can feel the effects from the alcohol.
No fun laying on the floor, rolled up in a ball, crying.....
My suggestion would be to have a few sips at home first. You wouldn't want
to be a the conference and have to leave because you got sick....... Good
luck

From what I've read, the pouch makes alcohol go almost directly and
immediately into the small intestine, where it is almost immediately
absorbed. (Food might mitigate that.) One woman I heard said she could
take a drink and be buzzed in 17 seconds. Which led to her becoming an
alcoholic (replacing the food addiction with an alcohol addiction). You'll
need to know yourself really well before you make that decision. Some
people wouldn't have a problem with it. I know I would. Good luck!

Personally I think you should be fine. I occasionally have 1/2 to 1 glass
of wine...I'm just 2 1/2 months out. I sip it slowly and I've had no
problems. It doesn't upset my stomach at all. Remember...moderation in
all things is the key.

Don't do it, it's not worth it, even if its the only bottle left in the
world.

Your pouch should be fine but be careful, you will get drunk FAST.

My doctor (at one month check) told me that a glass of wine was absolutely
fine. Just be mindful that the alcohol doesn't get absorbed the same as
before, so one glass sort of makes you feel like you've had 2 1/2. You're
a cheap date, now!

I can't handle any alcohol at all. My Dr. told me that I should be fine
with a glass of wine... but, one sip throws me over in no time flat! I
feel completely buzzed and a belly ache for hours! I would suggest you try
it before you go to your conference... that way your time there isn't
ruined by it. Good luck.

You should be fine. I drink wine with no problem at all. I don't get
buzzed any quicker than I did pre-op. I'd try drinking some now of similar
nature to see how your body reacts. That way you can enjoy yourself
without be stressed about it.
Have fun!

My absolute worst DUMP ever was after drinking a Margurita at a wedding
reception. It caused pain, cramps and cold sweats. Take care.

You guys are terrific! I really appreciate the feedback and experiences
... wondering if I should perhaps just stick to a dee-licious iced
tea...hmmm. Guess a call to my doc wouldn't hurt. Other information that
might be useful: 1.) I don't dump on SIMPLE sugars, and 2.) I'm being
treated for a stricture, and am taking Carafate, an anti-ulcer medication,
to treat the "ulcerations" that occurred with the stricture 6
weeks out. I have another EGD tomorrow, and my 4th a week before the trip.

Hey,
I would advise you to try it at home first. I have had other kinds of
alchohol and been fine, but I havent tried wine yet. I think you should be
ok, just in moderation (obviously).

They say you shouldn't drink for a year. I didn't and when I did a year
later...OMIGOD!!! It really burned...and I didn't even want it after that
...It may make you ill too so go slow. You should be okay...but my guess it
will burn like the alcohol that it is...on tender new surgery! ;) But be
prepared to feel your drink immediately...It will go straight to your
blood. 4 years later and I am a seriously cheap date! One glass and I am
looney tunes! Two, and someone is scraping me up off the pavement.

Sounds like you already made your decision. It isn't getting loopy that
bothers me, it is killing my liver quicker than the average joe that would
concern me. Your are right, only 2 oz probably won't hurt anyone, but 2 oz
now, just one time? I don't think that is your purpose. I think you want
occasional wine in your life. That is your choice, but your liver may be
the sufferer in the end. Patricia P.

You should be fine - IF you don't drink the sweeter wines. Stay anyway
from the sugary (sweet) ones - and keep some crackers or bread on you and
sip away!! Enjoy your specail night, it sounds like a lot of fun!!

I went on a cruise 5 months out and went to the fine wine tasting and just
had a sip of of about 5-6 wines.. and I mean just enough to wet the lips
and tongue and it was ok. I had rny 7-11-07 and so far no problems.. every
person is different just like every car and every child.. I tried wine at
home before, As i did not want to get sick on the cruise..
