Hi,
No need to worry. Gas is a common problem after RNY surgery; particularly
in the first several months. My surgeon says it is nothing more than your
body adjusting to its rearranged plumbing when consuming certain foods.
Dairy products tend to be the worst offenders, may be a sign of lactose
intolerance. ( Simply your body saying stay away from this food, at least
temporarily). My doctor assured me that with the passage of time the gas
problem will minimize.
Personally, take note of what you are eating and see if a particular food
makes you more gaseous, if so eliminate the offending food, especially if
the anti-gas products do little to relieve your symptoms. Hope this
helps.

I truly understand, I to have the same problem. I am 2 years out and 250
pounds smaller and boy oh boy can I clear a room. I get so miserable from
the gas that i to want to know what to do. I have tried Phazyne, Pepcid,
Gas-X, Beano, Tums, Rolaids and nothing seems to help. Good luck in
finding out what does.

OK, here is your absolute answer. Go to DEVROM.COM. It has a product that
takes the smell away and it works. Not even too expensive. Good luck, Lyn

Gas is a common issue post RNY. Some aftermarket internal products may
help. My suggestion is to buy some "purse sized" sprays (like
Ozium, etc) to bring with you, and have deoderizer economy sprays in home
bathrooms. Nothing is wrong, your digestive tract is altered. Some people
don't have much gas, but their "stool" is really noticeable in
the odor department. There is a product called Just A Drop that puts a
"film" over the water in the toilet bowl, to help seal in odors.
This will remove about 98% of the odor, and may come in handy if this is an
issue also. DAVE

Sorry it's a typical RNY complaint! Sugar and simple carbs including
lactose from milk products make my gas the worst! Taking a probiotic
regularly (once a week or as needed) Help to keep this under control. I
have bouts of really awful smelly gas and that is usually on a bad choice
eating binge! Taking antibiotics can also kill all the flora in your
intestines and often the bad bacteria builds up faster than the good
guys....So it's good to take a probiotic after antibiotics...Probiotics
help keep your intestines healthy too which helps in nutrition and vit
absorption! If taking a probiotic, you may have to wait up to 2 weeks for
the flora to "bloom", destroy the bad stuff and your body to
dispose of it. After that process, it's like night and day difference!
Yogurt has the same good bacteria or "flora" for a nicer
description of "bacteria"! There are sooooo many different brands
on the shelves...I could not even begin to guess which ones work better
than others! I got mine at Costco as they are usually on the ball with
decent products...but they stopped carrying the one I use and so now I'll
be trying a new one myself! Oh and...if you are lactose intolerant...take a
probiotic before you have cheese or milk and it helps tremendously...but
you still have to keep simple carbs and sugar and lactose in moderation if
you don't want this to be a constant battle! That's been my personal
experience anyway! Good luck!

If you are going to try Gas X, it has to be Gas X with Maalox. Nothing
else will work. Trust me I have tried. I have 5 years post op.

Hi, Alice. Ditto to what everyone is saying. I had the same for the first
few months following RNY. The week I decided to invest in some concentrated
air deodorizers (1 for each bathroom at home, additional ones for my
bedroom, etc., and 1 to carry with me in my purse at all times, the bad
smelling gas and stool problems went away. Go figure. Hope the same happens
to you. On the other hand, the positive side is that I have some really
nice, strong deodorizers to use for quite a while. :)

I'm over 8 years post-op and still fight this. I have noticed that the
amount of gas I deal with is directly proportional to the amount of carbs I
am ingesting. If I am eating lower carb fare then gas isn't too bad.
Higher carbs and I'm dying by mid-afternoon!!!

I seem to agree with many of the other posts... Try Devrom, and notice if
it is from certain foods. Carbs do it to me. It is a driving force that
keeps me low carb... especially at work, lol!!! On the weekends... watch
out~
