Question:
Drinking and eating at the same time...30 minute rule apply????
Hi. I had my Lap RNY on 1/31/08. My routine alot of mornings for breakfast is to have my protein drink as my meal. Well, lately, I"ve been trying to incorporate more calories and protein into the day, so I include some cottage cheese with my morning protein drink. IS this OK? Should the 30 minute rule apply here? It just hit me today that maybe the protein drink washes away the protein/nutrients from the cottage cheese...Since cottage cheese is a 'solid' food I THINK...maybe I can't do the two together. Any advice? — hatda (posted on July 14, 2008)

I had RNY and from that side of the surgery, the rule is 1 hour after solid
food. The reason is so you do not feel hungery as fast and want to eat
before the next regular meal time. Also, some RNY people get
"DUMPING" where they feel bad for 1-2 hours and warm from
drinking and eating at the same time. Not all, as I don't, but I try to
follow the rules. If you have the time, take the drotein drink first,
followed by the solid food. It will stay with you longer and you will feel
fuller longer.
Best of success to you.

You can do the two but you do need to wait that 30 minutes.....are you not
getting enough protein a day......you should be getting 65 grams at
least......and most of your protein should come from solid
foods.......there is a protein drink called New Whey Liquid Protein that
has 42 grams of protein per serving....it comes in a plastic vial and is
sold at the Vitamine shoppe's......it is good and about three swallows and
you have 42 grams of protein.....try it.

the rule is one hour before and after eating. Your flushing any food out
that you have eaten and not getting the nutrients.

I was told the nutrients are absorbed by your intestines so you're still
getting the benefit from them. The reason to keep the food in your stomach
longer is to keep you feeling full longer. Also was told that it didn't
matter how much protein you consumed, your body can only absorb about 30
grams at a time.

By "including" it with your protein drink do you mean you are
blending it in? Also there are flavorless protein powders that you could
add to your cottage cheese and then it wouldn't matter. I was told one
hour after meals but have since curbed that down to 30 minutes because I
thought I would die of thurst lol.

Hi hay day, I wouldn't eat and drink at the same time either. I hear that
that is a bad habit to get in to and people have been known to regain their
lost weight because they did not master this one rule. Since I want to be
successful--and I am sure you do too--don't eat the cottage cheese with the
drink. I am only 3 1/2 weeks out, but I do observe this rule ...as I do
all the rest. However, I read in the paper work you should wait 45 to 60
minutes before resuming drinking after eating solid foods. At my support
group meetings people were talking who were 10 months out and more saying
they didn't wait the 30 minutes before since the new tummy didn't hold
liquids in. so they drank then ate rather quickly, but always waited the
hour after. and they were successful to this point. Hope my info helps you.
Congrats on the surgery and good luck! hugs, Kim

Do them seperate...Use the 30/30 rule...You should be able to add protein
to any meal but not to liquid ones like the protein shake. A shake usually
has a good 30-40 g of protein...It shouldn't be too hard after that to add
that cottage cheese as a snack elsewhere...Also don't eat cottage cheese or
other slider foods with dense protein either or they too slide with the
slider food! It's not bad to use a little for moisture, but not over long
term or you find ways to eat more than you need to...That's a hard habit to
break late on...
