Question:
Anyone with infertility pre-op gotten pregnant and had successful pregnancy post op?

I've had several weigh-related fertility issues and am in the approval waiting stage of the wls process. I know that losing the weight will exponentially increase my fertility chances, but I'd love to hear from someone who has gotten pregnant and had a healthy and safe pregnancy/delivery after having wls.    — blondiewrites (posted on March 24, 2008)

RNY surgery tends to make women's hormones very active. My surgeon recommends 2 forms of birth control for the first several months post op. I know of one woman in my support group who had been married for 14 years, never used any birth control, and could never get pregnant. Guess what?? She got pregnant 2 years post op, when she went off of the doctor recommended birth control. She is very happy. She wanted a child, but wanted to lose her weight first. I think she's about 7-8 months along now, with no health issues.

Hi Tara, Yes before I had surgery I weighed 402 pounds and I am 33 years old and I have been married 10 years now and basically never used birth control. I never was told I couldn't have children but I was told I wasn't ovulating monthly or who knows if I ever was and was rarely getting my period. I never got pregnant before and wasn't using birth control. Then almost three years ago I had the surgery and now I have a seven and a half month old beautiful baby girl!!! At about 4 months post op I started getting my period normal and then at one year post op I basically was at MY goal. So at 15 months post op my husband and I stopped the condoms and boom I was pregnant on the first try!! I took three pregnancy tests because we couldn't believe it. I am so happy and can't wait to have a second. I had a very good pregnancy. The only thing I had during pregnancy was low blood platlets which they watched very closely, but that can happen to anyone. My baby is very healthy. I am also breastfeeding and she is doing great! I hope I've helped. Let me know if you have any other questions. Jeannie

Hi Tara, I'm 11 months post-op. I was diagnosed with POS and even went through several months of fertility treaments. I add my first period when I was 10 and after that up until after surgery I had to take medication inorder to have a period. I used the Nuvaring as my form of birthcontrol. so last month I decide not to insert the ring. I thought it might take a few months of trying to conceive. To my surprise on Thursday I took a home pregnancy test and found that I was PREGNANT. I was actually to by one doctor that i was too fat to conceive, my ovaries didn't produce eggs like they should with the cist coating them. I am happy that I had my wls. Good look with your wls and with having your children.

Hey Tara, I have struggled with infertility/carrying problems most of my reproductive life. I have both PCOS and Endometriosis, on top of being morbidly obese until surgery. That being said, this CAN help (but it's not a guarantee). Our son was just born 1 December. He was most definately a suprise baby! I had been doing what I was supposed to (faithfully applying my patch every week since before surgery!) and still managed to come up prego. Best we can calculate (because ym cycles aren't regular) is that I was a full 18 months out, like the docs want, before I got pregnant. I did lose one of them (twins) but my surviving son developed well and is a happy gurgly baby. The hardest things about pregnancy after WLS? Eating enough. I had WIC nutritionists, my WLS nutritionist, my OB's nutritionist...everyone wanted me to eat an astronomical amount!!! You still concentrate hard on proteins, but make sure you get fruits and veggies in there too.....boy is that hard. Best of luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have worked with non-profit organizations assisting women with obesity and metabolic disorders with things including infertility for many years now. I have seen it so many times, lose weight, get pregnant. I have two close friends who have done WLS. One did lapband, lost 50 pounds, and after a couple years of TTC she got pg. and is due anyday here with her baby. My other friend had gastric bypass, waited one year from her surgery and successfully got pg. - had a healthy baby girl. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!!
