Question:
4WKS OUT LAP RNY..DOWN 9 LBS???????

I EAT PROTEIN FIRST, AT LEAST 64 OZ WATER, DON'T SNACK, AND EXERCISE AT LEAST 30 MNS A DAY...I'M BEGINNING TO THINK I NEVER HAD SURGERY. I GUESS I'M ONE OF THE "LUCKY" ONES...I HAVE NOT BEEN SICK AT ALL AFTER SURGERY, AND EVERY FOOD THAT THE DRS HAVE GRADUATED ME ONTO, HAS BEEN FINE...NO PROBLEM. I'M GOING TO STEP UP MY EXERCISE TO SEE IF THAT HELPS, BUT CAN I TELL YOU ALL THAT I AM VERY DISCOURAGED? I TRY TO STAY OFF THE SCALE (EVIL SCALE), BUT I GO BACK TO IT EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE AND GET UNHAPPY AGAIN BECAUSE IT WON'T MOVE. I WAS LOSING MORE WEIGHT B4 SURGERY. WHAT SHOULD I DO? THE BARIATRIC NURSE SAID THAT THIS IS NORMAL, BUT I'M NOT BUYING IT. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM? THX    — Vicki S. (posted on October 10, 2006)

NO, I DIDN'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO TAKE VITAMINS THAT WOULD INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM. JUST ABOUT ANY B VITAMIN WOULD HELP A LOT. TALK IT OVER WITH YOUR DOC.

I agree with the above post about the importance of vitamins! I've been losing slowly but surely since July 11th and, counting from the two weeks prior to surgery on liquids, I've lost almost 70lbs., but....it has been unsteady too and I do what I'm told....I plateau for almost 3 weeks then suddenly drop 11lbs!!! Be patient and know that it IS better to go down slowly and lasting while you're learning new ways to live...it's safer and will stay off better too! I know how it feels though because I want to just wake up thin again tomorrow!!! It WILL happen!!! Keep up the good work!

Hi Vicki: This seems odd that you are only down 9 lbs in one month. What does your doctor and nutritionist say? How many calories are you consuming? I would definitely do some sort of aerobic exercise...get a dvd out of the library and try that for a week or so. The type of exercise you do is important...if you walk you can't stroll, you need to walk briskly to get your heart rate up. If you go to a gym like Curves, you must work to the max on the machines. I would definitely keep a food diary and record caloric intake as well as speed up your exercise. I also wonder if you are a "lightweight", meaning you have less than 100 lbs to lose. If so, check out the lightweight boards for suggestions. I am one month till surgery and I will be very upset if the weight doesn't "melt" off as it does for almost everyone! good luck!

Three questions: 1. How old are you?, 2. Are you a lightweight, 3 How much protein are you getting in in a day? I had lap RNY on July 27th and I have only lost 30 lbs but I am 55 years young, I am a light weight, only 100 to 120 lbs to lose. I get 84+ protein in per day. Also I take Vista Vitamins, Calciumm, B12 twice a week and I am eating right. No more than 3 or 4 ozs at a sitting. I just understand that at my age and being a light weight that the weight will come off slowly. I am hoping this will prevent the possibility of me having to have my gallbladder out and that this is better, losing slowly.

HI Vicki You say you are eating protein first. Being out only 4 wks you should still be on pureed food or at least pretty soft foods. You are still in the healing stage. Like said above. If you only have a little to lose you may lose slower than some. Also are you measuring your food. You should not be eating more than 4 oz. at a meal & it shold be mostly protein. Stay away from carbs & for sure you should not be eating bread or any sugar. Are you only eating 3 meals a day. & keeping track of what you are eating. If you are doing all of this than it will start again. Do not Panic Your body is still adjusting. Also do not drink with your meals. Make sure you wait at least 30 minutes after you eat before drinking. Sometimes it is hard to change old habits. but keep at it & your weight will start dropping again. Take care & also make sure you are not drinking any kind of carbinated drinks. NO SODA even diet will hurt & keep the weigh from dropping. Marilyn, the Bearlady

I lost the first 2-3 weeks, then had a 2+ week plateau. Then I started loosing again. I had this happen quite often, I would loose for a week or two and then have a week or two that I didn't loose anything. Don't be discourage, you will start loosing again.

Don't feel bad! I'm 9 weeks out & down 42 lbs. The kicker is that I've been stuck at 42 for about 3 weeks!! I know it can be discouraging & frustrating, but we can't give up...eventhough I'm tempted to. Of course, I couldn't if I wanted to b/c so many things make me sick. Eating the way I used to is now a thing of the past! :)

**ORIGINAL POSTER HERE** TO ANSWER A FEW OF YOUR QUESTIONS...I STARTED OUT AT 270 THE DAY OF SURGERY. I TAKE A MEGA MULTI-VIT TWICE A DAY, IRON, CALCIUM CITRATE, B1, B12, BIOTIN AND LIKE I SAID, I GET IN AT LEAST 64 OZ OF WATER/DAY AS WELL AS 70+GRAMS OF PROTEIN/DAY. I DON'T THINK I'M CONSIDERED A 'LIGHTWEIGHT'. I DON'T MEASURE MY FOOD, BECAUSE I DON'T EAT ENUF TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THAT (PLEASE DON'T BASH ME!!) IN THE MORN, I'LL HAVE A PROTEIN DRINK (54 GR) OR A SCRAMBLED EGG WITH CHEESE. AFTER I HAD MY STAPLES TAKEN OUT AT 2 WKS, I WAS GRADUATED ONTO STAGE 3 FOODS WHICH INCLUDE PUREED VEGGIES, LEAN FISH, POULTRY, YOGURT, SUGAR FREE POPSICLES, PUDDINGS, COTTAGE CHEESE, SOUPS, AND MASHED POTATOES OR A BAKED POTATO. I THINK I NEED TO STOP COMPARING MYSELF TO EVERYONE ELSE WHO LOSES SO FAST AND JUST UP MY EXERCISE AND WORRY ABOUT HOW I'M DOING. THANK YOU EVERYONE-YOU'RE GREAT!...VICKI

Hi, I hope my info will help you. I am 30 years old, was 295lb and had lap rny on 6-14-06. I know the first 6 weeks were murder for me. The scale was not moving and I was on it religiusly every day. I was doing everything the doctor told me taking my vitamins, protein, water, excersize. But I was eating what felt good, (white bread, sweet potato etc) I was deluding juice with water and mixing my protein so that it would taste good, just to find out that I was not loosing weight, the good doc. told me no bread, no potatoes and no juice even deluded my body was eating of the sugar and would not realise the fat. I switched to cristal light and yogurt and cottage cheeze. I started loosing slowly but continued with the scale and it did a number on me. All I want to tell you is that get ready your first 3 month will be tough it is now that I am starting to notice the difference and feeling the difference so far I lost 41lb it is not much but the way I look at it is the last time I was size 18 is 6 years ago before I had my kids so it is working. Just give it time and do your self a favor toss the scale, enjoy your life and consentrate on the future not present. Every one of us is so different that I stoped paying attention to the ladies on this site that loose the weight like a melting butter, forget all just keep up with what you doc. tells you and get ready because you will hit platues and they are nasty the last one I had was in August and I did not loose not even one pound in the whole month but the inches where flying becuase I moved from size 24 to 20 and now it's big on me, so just be patient because you did not wake up fat over night why are you expecting to get skinny in 4 weeks? God Bless good luck and congrats you are on the way to a new life and journey might be bumpy but the outcome is going to be great.

I just wanted to drop in and add that i hope you are not discouraged by this slower loss....everyone truely loses differently...i lost very quickly at the start of my journey...i was down 68 lbs in the first 3 months, however now in the last 3 months i have only lost about 18 lbs / but according to my surgeon my weightloss is right on track for 6 months post-op. It sounds like you are doing everything right, just relax and enjoy your journey (and yes get rid of the evil scale :) it can drive you nuts...good luck and best wishes~Tiffany

If you were graduated onto baked potatoes and mashed, which I know many programs include to help people get in enough calories, the problem might be as simple as you're getting in too many carbohydrates. Because you are giving your body an easy source of fuel, it is less likely to burn its own stores of fat. Think about boosting your protein a little (we all need a little tweaking) and curtailing the carbs (remember that all the vitamins and supplements are probably giving you about 12 carbs a day) to about 24 grams per day. By getting your body into ketosis, you should be able to expedite your initial weight loss.
