Question:
Any medical reason why we can't have a Glucose Tolerance Test Post op?
I notice on some answers to a question about Insulin Resistance that someone said we can't have a GTT can you tell me why I am scheduled for one because I keep passing out from low blood sugars but whenever we do a fasting I am in the normal range. Thanks for any help. — nefish (posted on June 19, 2006)

They say that you "shouldnt" because of the amount of sugar in
the drink, and sugar makes you dump...I am 3 years post op, and was
pregnant last year, and had to take the sugar test...It made me a little
queasy, but I was ok about an hour after...Hope this helps

Too much sugar for our little pouch to handle at once.

It's not valid . . . sugar hits your gut all at once, rather than
regulated. Stomachs squirt out food a little at a time, pouches dump
liquids directly into gut, all at once.
You blood sugar problems are probably reactive hypoglycemia. The trick to
this is to eat a little protein, maybe a little carb (of the whole grain or
veggie type) every couple of hours.
If you start to crash, eat carbs AND protein, like PB sammich, or PB cheese
crackers to rescue. Eating sugar, or lots of bare carbs (without protein)
will induce a crash a coule of hours later.
Good luck, and be CAREFUL!

I came here looking for this same answer. Funny. I'm scheduled for one on
Thursday and spoke in depth with the lab and medical staff concerning my
fears with the test. I was told that they would only give me half of the
drink, the entire drink contains 110mg of sugar. I explained that I
probably wouldn't tollerate it well, so they will have an MD available in
the event I need one. My doctor's office has a lab in house, so it's a
matter of running 20 feet. I'm amost 5 years out and have built up quite
the tollerance, but 55mg is a lot. Good luck with yours.

Not sure why their still the GTT still that is an old test. I had my last
one done 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my 2nd child 3rd pregnancy.
I was diagnosed with the A1c test and then monitored with doing diascans
every 2 hours for 12 hours after I ate. Not sure how they would test us if
we can't tolerate suger from a gtt doesn't make a whole lot of since if
your going to be sick from the test it self.

I have trouble understanding why a doc would need this test. Is it just to
prove what you already know, but he doubts?? There's no way I'm going to
pass out for them as a demonstration, I will just explain that I have a
sugar problem, have them run anything else but the GTT test. Even before I
had my innards rearranged, this test knocked me into oblivion. My doc ran
the Ac 1 3 or whatever it's called, and told me I have hypoglycemia...like
I didn't know that already. The endocrinologist on taking a regular BS
test during a visit ran and grabbed two glucose tabs and made me eat them
right there, and I wasn't even feeling low yet, so I can only imagine how
low it actually gest. She insisted I carry glucose tabs with me if I
intend to drive, because with reactive hypoglycemia one never knows when it
will strike, and you don't want it to happen while driving. I grab a
glucose tab and have a protein shake chaser, and that usually fixes the
problem. Regards~
