Question:
Clothes don't seem to be getting any smaller

Hi, I had an open RNY on March 25,2003, and to date have lost around 53lbs. I'm really happy about that, what I don't under stand is why it seems that other people on this site that have lost that much weight, need to buy new clothes, I don't yet, they are alot bigger than they were, but still fit. Kind of frustrating. I should probably tell you that I started out at 355lbs. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.    — KIM E. (posted on May 30, 2003)

One theory i have seen on here is that before we had surgery, most of us wore stretch clothing and it was stretched to the limit or too tight. So when we start losing, the clothes begin to fit the way they should so it takes a while to see a size change. Example. Maybe was in a tight 28 and actually needed a 30 or 32 so what weight is lost put you into an actual 28. Make any sense?

I have the same "problem" - it means nothing to me as long as I keep dropping the lbs! I think if you went to a store and tried on something new you would be surprised! 53lbs is great congrats!!!

Hi, Kim. We started out at about the same weight. It took me about 70 pounds before I noticed my clothes getting big. The previous poster who said we probably weren't wearing the right size to begin with is right!! Congratulations on such a great weight loss. My first 50 pounds had to come off before my surgery and that took almost five months!! To do it in a month is wonderful! Best of luck to you!!--Julie

Took 6 months to really notice they were baggy on me and I didn't actually buy new clothes until I reached 150 lost. And then ONLY because my underwear fell off of me...thank god I was wearing pants that day! Ack! Give it time, it will happen.

I have found, too, that now that I am wearing smaller clothes, I need to lose less weight to get to the next smaller size. I've lost 105 pounds in 7 1/2 months and still need to lose about 60 more. But now I drop sizes after losing 20 pounds rather than after losing 50 pounds. I also pushed the sizes when I was at my highest weight. I should have been in a 30, but stretching out a 28. Like the other poster said, clothes in larger sizes are stretchier. Just last week I was looking for replacements for my stretchy blue pants that don't fit any longer. I couldn't find stretchy pants anywhere. Then I realized that they don't make stretchy pants in business clothes for 18/20. You'll get there. Congrats on your progress so far!

Kim I know how you are feeling I had my surgery on March 25th this year have lost about the same weight as you and still wearing all same clothes. I have noticed clothes being bigger but am waiting for the day when I get into smaller size. I started at 409 as my top weight and am 5'10" tall.

Sometimes we think that we look thinner when we are swimming in our newly oversized clothes. However, if you start wearing smaller clothes (even a couple sizes smaller) that fit well, you'll be surprised how much your loss shows.

Kim~I totally understand what you are going through! I am a few days shy of being 10 weeks post op and have lost 70 lbs. I feel great physically due to the loss and the exercise I do, but my clothing size is not necessarily going down. I was getting totally frustrated, but have come to the realization that the clothes I was wearing pre-op were stretched to the gills, while now they fit me either looser.

I've gone down 2 sizes but not because I thought I did...more because others told me to stop wearing those other baggy clothes. If others hadn't told me how poorly I looked in those clothes, I'd still be wearing them. I agree with the first response that we do stretch our clothing to fit. LAP RNY (4/16/03 -36)
