Question:
Getting scared reading so many posts about vomiting!

I have been reading all of the posts for over a month while waiting to complete all the requirements of precertification that my insurance requires and the word that keeps popping up is "vomit". I wouldn't have a problem with occasional vomitting knowing that it would cease eventually, but I just read so much on here about it, that I am getting a bit leary. I am going for lap band surgery as soon as my insurance ok's it.    — MzScarlet (posted on January 10, 2010)

*L* don't worry. (I had a bypass-best 38 minutes of my life!!)It is not like you are sitting there and suddenly spew all over the table! I still have vomiting issues and I am years out-but that is ONLY when I do something that I know I shouldn't. Like, that pastry is calling my name and I listen! Even a couple of bites of food that is bad for me and I get sick. Not the "immediate" vomit I was warned about, but that sick gonna need to find a bathroom feeling. I get this with too much sugar, and fat, which is exactly the things we should not be eating-now we know for real why. I got married two years ago and during a time I was still finding my "sea legs" so to speak, about what I could eat and couldn't, and vomiting was a normal occurance if I ate those things (or too fast) and to the point that my new husband thought I actually had an eating disorder! (still kind of does!) But my body's reaction to certain food has taught me what is HEALTHY to eat and what is not-and even if I THINK it is and it isn't, my body rejects it! I find that rather than fight this, I listen to what my body is telling me and when I do that, no vomiting!

first of all, i want to share by saying i had the lap band and i have lost over 100 pounds in 1.5 years and it was THE best thing i have done for myself. i am at goal (a size 8-10) and couldn't be happier. the thing about vomiting, and let me tell you..... i would rather DIE then vomit, it's only because you have eaten something you shouldn't have. and it doesn't have that awful nausea feeling along with it. it just kind of comes up and you feel so much better. it's usually with gluttony like substances that can't go down. and that means there's only one way up. now, if you get an overfill that is where you are too tight and you will continue to vomit. my dr. did this by accident and i have to say it was the night from hell. but, i went to his office the very next morning and had 2 cc's taken out and had immediate relief. please don't let this fear keep you from having the surgery. the lap band has been my 'guard rails' as i call it and was the best thing i could have done for myself. i wish you the best of luck. cindy

I had Gastric By-pass on December 30, 2009 and have not had any issues with vomiting. I have followed what the Doctor tells me to do and I am doing great.

Not all of us have problems. I'm 5 days out and have not had any issues with vomiting or nausea. Good luck!

Marinell I'm 18 months out and I haven't vomited once. I've never even been close. People tend to vomit if they have eaten too much or too fast or if they have eaten the wrong things. Marinell don't put the limits and you'll do fine. Good luck!

Just like the previous posts, if you stick to dr's orders you will do fine. I have had only 1 incident and that was when I tried to eat too fast-- after vomiting I felt fine

I am a NON vomit kinda girl... so the thought bothered me alot also. But don't worry.... I am almost 5 months and only threw up once. Everyone's surgery and recovery is different, just do what they tell you and you will be fine. The one time I did vomit was my own fault, I had been drinking water and didnt wait the half hour before trying to eat. HUGE mistake, eat slow and chew good, you will be fine.

I had RHNY on Nov 23 and have had no nausea at all since leaving the hospital. I am following what my nutritionists say to eat and drink. I havent tried eating out yet. I hate to vomit and would do just about anything not to. Not all of us have these problems but if you do, you will work it out and learn fast what you can tolerate and what you cant. Best of luck for your surgery. My surgery saved my life. Ive lost 52+lbs so far. Suzette

I don't want to be the Debbie Downer but here goes anyway. I had RNY on 11/02/09. I have lost 70 lbs as of today. The first 6 weeks were fabulous. I had no nausea no problems of any kind. Then 6 weeks hit and I have been sick ever since. Nausea and Vomitting. I have vomitted more times TODAY than the last 10 years total. I avoid it at ALLL costs, now I can't keep water ANYTHING down. I have been in the ER twice, admitted once. I am going to be admitted tonight AGAIN for rehydration so I can make it through an EGD tomorrow to see what is up. They are guessing a stricture....you can search it and see others who have had it. Supossedly it will be an easy fix. I have done EVERYTHING to the letter, protein, vitamins, calcium, walking etc. I don't want to scare you but I do want you to have a true picture that it isn't super easy always. I know it will be worth it in the end. I am not as familiar with lap-band side effects but I know that they try REALLY REALLY hard to make sure you all don't vomit bc of band slippage. So good luck and just be aware of every side effect you could have.

Have you considered another type of surgery? Check out the other surgical forums and see if there's another kind that doesn't seem to have this issue.

please keep in mind everyone is different. I read all of the negative posts I could find just to be informed. I had my laproscopic gastric bypass last Tuesday, was up walking by Tuesday night. Got all my fluids in during the day, kept paid under control. Had a really bad hour as far as nausea (no vomit) and a migrain on Wednesday night. Went home Thursday, liquid diet, no issues no vomitting. Had 1.2 oz pureed chicken last night and did just fine. Returned to work today and did a much shortened day but got what I needed done. Again don't be disheartened, everyone is different. I figure I am really lucky (and I am knocking like crazy on my wooden headboard). Good luck
