Question:
Protein bars? So many carbs and calories!
I'm 4 weeks post-op (RNY) and my nut says to be off liquid protein and use protein bars instead. I've checked out a lot of brands but was shocked at the carb and calorie amounts. She says 200 cals is ok, but those with that amount have carb amounts of over 30! And the protein amount for these is only between 9 and 20 grams. I'm inclined just to try to get my protein naturally...thoughts? — fawn3710 (posted on November 5, 2009)

Idon't know if you have a Kroger's grocery store by you, but my nut
suggested pure protein bars, they have like 2grams of sugar and 18 grams of
protein and calories arn't bad either. You may be able to also find
somewhere else or on line. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Here are two more sources for you. Go to www.SmartForme.com. They have
delicious caramel nut bars with 15 grams of protein, 15 grams of carbs, and
150 cal. Or try BariatricChoice.com. They carry several brands of
Bariatric Protein Bars. I found one called Doctor's CarbRite Diet Bars
with 20 grams of protein, 23 grams of carbs, and 200 cal. They carry
others with 15 grams of protein, 14-16 grams of carbs. and 150-160 cal.
They also carry protein snacks, protein shakes/puddings, and other
bariatric foods. If possible, go to an ObesityHelp Event near you. You'll
usually find free samples from these types of vendors, so you can taste
various items for yourself. Some WLS Support Groups give out free samples
of Bariatric foods on occasion as well. I hope that helps.
Congratulations on your surgery. I wish you all the best as you journey
toward good health. God Bless.

I eat prue protein bars. They are sold at walmart and Sam's club. They are
20 grams of protein, 2g of sugar, 200 cals, 6g of fat and 16g carbs. I love
the chocolate peanut butter but they come in many different varieties. My
doctor says that I should have it as a meal and not a snack. I had VSG Aug
19, 2009.

I am seven months post op from RNY and I still eat 1 or 2 protien bars from
Bariatric Choice each day. They have at least 15 gr of protein, about
150-160 calories, and 4 gr of sugar. They have lots of flavors and I
haven't found any I don't enjoy. Sometimes I want a snack that tastes like
a treat and these fit the bill and are better than any type of "junk
food" snack.

I eat the Supreame brand. I get them at GNC. they range from, 200 - 300
calories and 15 - 17g of protein. They are low carb and low sugar. I love
them just becuase they taste like candy bars. I have tried to many brands
to count before I found these.

I use pure protein bars, Met rx bars and south beach bars..they range from
10 grams to 20 and from 140 to 200 calories, carbs are low. Just be
carefula nd read labels before just buying any. Some south beach and met
rx's are higher in carbs and cals. Best of luck to you...btw..Sam's club
sells the pure protein bars ..18 for 16+ change..a good deal where I
live..and I still do a preotein drink if i don't do the bar..I use EAS from
sams...case of 24 for 27$ best of luck. hugs, Kim

I buy Power Crunch bars from either The Vitamin Shoppe or GNC. They are
the only ones I've found that have MORE protein than carbs. For instance,
the one in front of me, "Cinnamon Bun" flavor, is 205 calories,
12 fat (way too much for one sitting), 10 grams of carbs, and 14 proteins.
It comes in several flavors - my favorite being peanut butter cream. They
are kinda like the frosted diamond patterned wafers that are about an inch
wide and 4 inches long with several layers of frosting between the wafers,
on this is a big bar. As I said, the only drawback is the fat. My
nutritionist says I should have no more than 8 grams of fat per meal.
