Question:
Has anyone tried Soy Protein?
Has anyone tried Soy Protein? Is it a product that can be used after surgery? I haven't had surgery but doing research on gastric bypass and I have been buying samples packages of protein powders to see if I can drink the protein shakes before having surgery. I like the tastes of Soy protein better than Whey protein. Which I know everything will taste different after surgery. — jchicks87 (posted on September 29, 2009)

I use the unflavoured soy with no problem and have lost 120 pounds so far.

Yes, I've tried the soy protein - I bought it because the health food store
was out of my particular brand of whey protein and it looked like a good
substitute calorie-wise and grams-wise. I specifically used it prior to my
surgery on the pre-op diet, and I used it specifically in my morning
oatmeal. It acts a lot differently than whey protein - whey protein would
thicken my oatmeal until I could barely stir it, even when I added extra
water. Soy protein on the other hand, thinned it until it was almost
drinkable. I didn't find one or the other preferable, they both seemed
good to me, it was just funny how they affected the food they were put into
so differently. I doubt that they would affect liquids like that - or at
least not so that you would notice.

Yes I have tried them and they are wonderful. Like the Erica stated they do
work better in some of the foods they are added to.

I have not even had surgery yet so I am not sure how qualified I am to
answer this question however I could not let this one point go. Soy is
what is called a phytoestrogen. It is an estrogen mimicker. Estrogen
excess puts wieght on people so it is something that I personally make a
point to stay away from.
It would be interesting to note if anyone has experienced a slow down or
plateau with thier wieght loss after switching to a soy based protien?

Soy "isolate" is the best quality and find one that is NON- GMO
(Genetically modified). Then make certain it contains at least 13 to 18
amino acids to insure it is a complete protein or at least says somewhere
on the container that it is a complete protein...Both soy and whey can put
weight on you if you over eat it... and infact, too many calories of of
any food, be it apples or butter will make you gain weight. Soy is a much
lower fat and calorie protein than whey just for your info...I started
using a soy whey blend supplement by EAS at 3 1/2 years po and my skin
changed almost immediately and began tightening quite nicely. I felt
muscles tone up as well and breasts even filled out surprizingly well after
using the soy supplement and stepping up my exercise a little as well. It's
definately been this woman's friend! Just my experience!
