Question:
Anyone had an endoscopy?

I'm having an endoscopy done tomorrow at 12:30pm. Will it hurt afterwards? And will I be able to eat at all on Thanksgiving, in moderation of course? I have heard that my throat will hurt, and unfortunately, I have a very low pain threshhold. Any experience with an endoscopy?    — C P. (posted on November 25, 2008)

I've had two (one pre-op, one years ago unrelated). Both left me with a little bit of a sore throat but nothing like a bad cold. One I remember vaguely of what occured during the procedure, the other I don't remember a bit of. It really depends on the doctor.

I have had it done twice. I was out both times. I had no pain at all. If you have a good doctor they should give you medicine to put you out for the proceedure and you should be fine rihgt after you wake up.

They do not hurt, I have had 2. Only thing is that you won't remember anything.

I've had 3 since August. No pain, no problem. Minor throat irritation afterwards, but it goes away quickly. You'll be fine for the holiday. Good luck!

I had an emergency endoscopy done in September. Afterward I was groggy and exhausted from the anesthesia. My throat was tender for a few days, but tolerable. Felt very similar to the very beginnings of a cold. You'll be fine for the Holiday.

You will be fine. You shouldn't remember much if anything. You might feel like you are getting a slight cold or a tickle in your throat. I didn't have any of that. You might be sleepy for a little while after the procedure.

They particially knocked me out but I don't remember a thing! When I woke up though they told me to take a deep breath and they pulled the tube out of my throat. It was an odd feeling, but I was so groggy I just followed instructions and took a deep breath... I was sore for a few days but they also took a biopsy. My throat was badly burned form acid reflux and hiatal hernia...Tests all came out good and after RNY surgery I never had acid reflux again...nor do I have a clue what happened to my hiatal hernia. BUT...My insurance company almost refused to pay for the endoscopy and biopsy...But they finally agreed after seeing the pictures and reports that it was necessary...It was almost a $1000 procedure if they decided not to cover it! Glad they did!

I have had 4 done. My stomach kept closing and they would go in and open it. My throat never hurt. Because they were opening my stomach it was a little sore but nothing that a really good nap and rest the day of the EDG won't fix. Just make sure to take it easy that day and eat soft food. The next day you should be fine. I will pray for you! Kate

My throat didn't really start to hurt for a couple of days, but the it was like a cold. My nose even started to run. I didn't really want to eat much other than soup. And it is funny but here I am 4 weeks post op and the only thing I want to eat again is soup (oh yeah, and cottage cheese.)

I had one done. during the procedure i woke up and they had the scope in my throat. It was horrible. Make sure they give you enough medicine to knock you out. When I talked to my primary doctor he said that they didnt give me enough medicine so thats why i woke during the procedure and started to gag with the scope down my throat. My throat was very sore for over three days very hard to eat...make sure they give you ENOUGH MEDICINE.....Good Luck....I hope yours is better than mine
