Question:
Psych Eval needed
First of all, thank you all for your advice on not using a psychiatrist who is requiring 8 visits before she would give me clearance. Now I'm looking for a doctor in the Long Island, NY area, who will do a clearance for me. My problem is I need a doctor who will give me an appointment quick. Any recommendations? I will also go to Queens. Thanks!! — franks310 (posted on July 13, 2008)

I was one of those who thought you were getting "ripped off" with
8 visits, when you only need one. Was the shrink the one referred to by
your surgeon? You might check back with that surgeon and see if they work
with any other shrinks. If this shrink that wanted 8 visits is within your
insurance network, I'd let them know about this issue. DAVE

My Dr reccommended my physc dr and I only had to go one time and talk with
her about 15 min.....then had to take a computer physc test that ask alot
of the same questions in various manners......I just answered as truthfully
as possible and didn't really dwell on it or wonder what I answered to the
hlast question......I didn't think it was bad at all and she told me before
I left that I was ok and ready to go.

I am another one that thought you were getting ripped off. I would call
around and tell them what you need and see which one could get you in
quick. Most of them will do what it takes for you (the client and the one
paying the bill) Good Luck

I would also suggest seeing if it is ok with your surgeon and/or insurance
for you to see a LMHC (Licensed mental health counselor) or a LCSW
(Licensed clinical social worker). I saw an LMHC and it was fine with my
surgeon. I was a self pay so keep that in mind. Usually able to get in
quickly.
Good luck to you,

I too had a shrink that just tested me out, it was the worst thing about
the entire surgery. As it turned my honest answers that she interpreted as
'being ready, prepared, and with realistic goals and expectations"
were really and indication that I didn't have clue about how vast the
impact the RNY would have on my life. I paid the shrink out of pocket
(insurance didn't cover at all) if I had to do all over again, I'd happily
pay 8 times the price to another shrink avoid the trauma the surgery
inflicted. Be careful what you ask for.
