Question:
I posted this earlier but I do not think I was clear enough on my question

I had rny done on Jan 27, 2002 in houston, tx performed by dr wongsa--he was supposed to take my gallbaldder out at the same time but he forgot and i had to go back 2 years later and have him remove that. I started out at 435lbs and made it down to 284, ever since my original surgery i have had severe constipation, having bowel movements that are very hard--i wold tell him and he would yell at me and said i was just eating the wrong thing, i went back to him when the pain continued he says that he would perform a revision on me for free, i just had to take care of hospital bill, of course uhc denied me--i just gave up. I started to live on vicodin for the stomach pain and hoped for a bowel movement at least 1 a week. I have taken every over the counter laxative and precriptions,,feb 11 this year I had the lapband put on and the dr told me from dr wonga's report that he did not put my bowel back behind the colon that it was in the front of the colon--he never mentioned this to me, he never told me anything about my colon being put somewhere else--do you think this has contributed to my severe constipation and is this standard on super obese patients? i was informed of alot of risks and complications but not anything about colon being rearranged. MY new dr is ordering me a colonoscopy to see if i have had a bowel obstruction all these years. I am just curious if this is standard in RNY. Thanks    — tylerswife (posted on May 27, 2008)

This is the first I am hearing of something not being put back in the right place, but I'm sure, for whatever reasons, it happens. It makes me wonder if it happened to me, as I'm sure other people who read this might wonder too. Hopefully the colonoscopy will reveal what the trouble may be. I wish I had more advice to offer, but I don't. Good luck and keep us posted!

No it is not standard in RNY. I have, however, known 2 people who have had similar problems from RNY done around the time period that you had your proceedure. My own sister had the RNY in 2003 and has had some constipation issues herself, but fortunately, nothing as severe as your situation. I feel great sympathy for you and hope this new doctor is able to give you some relief.

I would talk to my NEW dr about it first see what all he has to say about it. If he has it in Dr's notes that the other Dr said he did it wrong ask for a copy of it then go get yourself a lawyer and sue him for malpractice. It cant do any harm to look into it. I wish you the best and will keep you in my prayers. ~Jen <><

I dont understand what was "Taken out" with RNY. Its laproscopically done. Nothing gets taken out. This is why you should investigate your perspective dr to the fullest extent. I would go see a surgeon. Forget the quack that did your surgery. I dont mean to sound harsh but he did something wrong. Right from the start

From what I know, pain medication can cause constipation. How is your water intake? There are gentle, natural products that help the colon draw in more water - maybe you should ask about that. An herbalist can guide you with that. The colonoscopy sounds like a good idea. I used to have poopy trouble but finally found balance nutritionally.

I'm so sorry you are going through all this. My first thought when reading your post was your doctor is an a$$ and I would look into getting an attorney and look into a malpractice suit. Second, I have Fibromyalgia and I know from experience, pain pills can make you extremely constipated. I don't think they have caused your problem but they probably aren't helping any. You might ask your new doctor about the pain pills making the problem worse and see what he says. If you can't get help there, find a doctor who will. This is your quality of life and you should do whatever it takes to get your life back. Good luck!

Find another Bariatric surgeon, and get you guy doing the colenostmay to report for you the problem and UHC will have to take care of it. I got turned down by them for my surgery after getting approve. My doc switched hoswpitals. They are bad. Look, you got a problem from surgery, because I take just Omega 3 oil pill once a day with dinner and never am constipated. I was about three weeks after surgery, and this is what they asked me to take. It works, and I stick with it. You might want the new doc to tighten up the pouch to help you lose more weight, and you might have him check the deridium to make sure it all was moved. That will effect weight loss. Best of success to you.

I would follow up with another surgeon and take all reports to a lawyer. I think your previous surgeon was a quack and thats why he put all the blame on your eating habits and offered to do the revision for free. He did not want to deal with the mistakes he made in your surgery. Good thing your insurance denied, now you have a malpractice case. and I would pursue it. t king columbus ohio
