Question:
Can you please suggest a good protein shake?
I just found out that my insurance was approved, and that the surgeon's office is scheduling surgery for the first week in December. I've had some abnormal kidney results come back, and have read that it could be related to Slim Fast. First, does anyone know if that's true. Secondly, can anyone suggest a good protein shake? The surgeon's office is closed for Thanksgiving, so I believe that I'm supposed to be on a liquid diet, but I'm not sure what I should be consuming. I want to lose the 10 lbs. before surgery, but the dietician hasn't called back. Thanks for any suggestions from those who know! — blu_iz68 (posted on November 23, 2007)

I use one scoop designer whey (from vitamin store), 8 oz skim milk milk, 4
oz sf ice cream and some sugar free vanilla syrup (target or wal-mart have
them cheaper than vitamin stores). You could even put s.f. chocolate syrup
in. Blend - you can even freeze if you get tired of the liquid.
This gives you 12 oz liquid; 29 protein; 29 carb; 260 calories

I have been using Syntrax Nectar myself and it only has 90 calories per
serving and 23 grams of protein. It comes in a variety of flavors and it
mixes with water.

HI, GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR UPCOMING SURGERY!! I HAD RNY ON 11/9 AND I'M HAVING
A HARD TIME WITH MY PROTEIN. I BOUGHT VANILLA, CHOCOLATE, BERRY, AND
UNFLAVORED WHEY AND AFTER SURGERY I CAN'T STAND THE TASTE OF ANY OF THEM. I
ALSO BOUGHT SAMPLES OF THE NECTAR, LEMONADE, FUZZY NAVEL, STRAWBERRY, ETC
AND I DON'T LIKE ANY OF THEM EITHER. YOUR TASTE WILL CHANGE AFTER SURGERY
SO DON'T BUY ALOT OF LARGE CONTAINERS OF WHEY BECAUSE THERE'S A STRONG
CHANCE YOU WON'T LIKE THEM AFTER SURGERY. I ALSO TRIED THE DRINKS FROM GNC
AND DON'T LIKE THEM EITHER, RIGHT NOW I'M DOING THE BULLETS(ORANGE IS
TOLLERABLE) AND THEY HAVE 46 GRAMS OF PROTEIN PER BULLET AND I'VE TRIED THE
SYLVESTOR STALLONE PUDDING (20GRAMS) IT'S OK. HOPE THIS HELPS. GOD BLESS,

I use the IsoPure brand of whey protein "shake". It's a powder
that you mix with water or skim milk. It's at GNC or Rite Aid stores. I
mix mine with the Magic Bullet, the small cup blenders. This works well
for me post surgery. Pre surgery I just watched what I ate and lost about
15 pounds the last 3 weeks. Post surgery you'll need some protein
supplements, because you can't get enough normal protein through the
limited amount of food you can eat. Protein supplements, calcium
supplements and a good vitamin are essential to good health--oh, and don't
forget daily exercise of some type.

I, too, use IsoPure. I tried the Unjury brand and didn't find it
appealing. That said, apparently I'm in a minority as many seem to prefer
Unjury. I haven't tried any that are particularly tasty, but I can at
least tolerate the IsoPure.
What I'd really prefer is a chewable protein supplement, and while they're
around, the ones I've seen contain miniscule amounts of protein.

Hey I have tried a few. I have tried EAS did not like it. I tried Six Star
from Walmart, hate it, I found that unjury vanilla is pretty tolerable and
the chocolate tast like chocolate milk.

Any of these are what I use:
1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender
or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel
sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz hot water, stirred or
hand blender.
Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon
fights belly fat.
I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of
vit D3).

Any Whey Tasteless protein powder bought from GNC-- no shipping and
handling charges if you go to their store. It is not 100% tasteless, but
if you put it in crystal light, or iced tea, it is very tolerable! This
was the only protein I could tolerate after surgery. I am now almost 8
months post op and still use it. Will soon use it in baking as well. It
can be used in hot drinks or grits, hot oatmeal etc too. Good luck, God
Bless!

I really like the Matrix 5.0 products as well as Nectar. I LOVE the Nectar
Chocolate Truffle. I have tried products from generic store brands, GNC,
known national brands and these are my favorite.

Best of Luck to you on your date. Call your doctor Monday and ask, but I am
sure they will call you. My doctor at Barix only required a full 24-hours
on liquids before surgery, my sisters said 5 days, every one is different.
and by the way, neither of us had any problems, so each doctor is different
with his protocol. Good Luck!

My physician's office sells Protidiet. It has 15 proteins per serving
which they recommend. You can also order this on line. My friend found a
website that has protein drinks. You can order 6 cans for $5.00 the first
time and then after that the price goes up. Mix with skim milk to get your
15 calories per serving. Also remember you do not want more than 5 grams
of fat or 10 grams of sugar per serving. I am surprised your doctor
doesn't supply you with this information to help make you a success. Good
Luck.

it's interesting to know you were told your kidney problem came from slim
fast! I am using the Slim Fast LOW CARB for my protein source- 20g Protein,
1 Sugar and only like 190 calories. the nutritionist at my surgeons office
said that is fine. What was it in the slim fast that caused the kidney
problems? Good luck with your surgery. i only had to be on the liquids 2
days before my surgery, but like everyone says....each doctor is different.
hope this helps... Holly

There's also the ISOPURE ZERO Carb fruit drinks that you can mix with
water. Don't purchase anything with orange or banana -- nasty. I purchase
Alpine Punch, Apole Melon and Grape Frost. I used to mix them with water
but now I drink them straight. I also drink the Dr. Atkins protein shakes
-- those are the two I mostly drink. Although I have the powered whey and
mix with Soy milk and fruit -- I don't do that often because I don't have
the time.

GNC has a couple of liquid proteins under their Properformance brand. They
say you can drink it straight however I would reccomend it. I mixed mine
with SF drinks. Early on I found the smaller size to be more disirable (who
want to drink icky stuff all darn day?). Protidiet requires only 4-5 oz to
mix their protein in. You can find that online and at many doctor's
offices. By the way don't by mass ammounts before surgery because your
tastes change ALOT. Oh, Muscle Milk is also a good drink. Best of luck!

I have tried many of the brands listed included the Designer Whey (very
good, but some after taste), and Nectar (good and mixes with water), but
the one I love is EAS ready to drink chocolate delight from Walmart. It
has absolutely NO after taste and I love it for breakfast. Tastes like a
yoohoo. Please try it!!! I have lost 103 lbs. Good luck to you!!

Had my lap RNY on 11/6/07. Pre-op total liquid diet consisted of Carnation
Instant Breakfast mixed with skim milk for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The rest of the time, I used water, coffee, tea, Crystal Light, and Jell-o.
I know it doesn't sound appetizing, but stay focused on your goal. It
WILL get better.

All doctors are different. I am supposed to have shakes that say
"meal replacement" on the container & water with Crystal
light, Wyler's light, etc... for the 2 weeks pryer to my RNY revision
December 7). I had already purchased the IsoPure creamy vanilla and opened
it beforehand. I don't care for it in water. Milk hepled a little, but I
still think it's nasty. Good luck, Maria, with your diet and surgery.

Before my Lap Band surgery, I drank a lot of Sugar free Carnation Instant
Breakfast w/skim milk.If you can keep your sugar intake low, you should go
into ketosis and lose more weight before surgery. Good Luck to you!

I like Beneprotien because it has no taste. I mix 5 scoops with 16oz of
water and crystal light this gives you 30 gm of protien. For me it seems
easier to drink without ice, just cool water.
