Question:
PLEASE HELP!! WHAT DOES THE STAGE 3 DIET CONSIST OF???
I am 4 days post op and my doc said not to advance past stage 3 until I see him on October 29, 2007. The list provided only says that I can have Full Clear Liquids. Strained cream of chicken soup ( if I eat anymore of it I'll vomit), egg drop soup, protein shakes, chicken or beef broth, and any other liquid, i.e. water, crystal light, plain coffee or tea, diet gelatin, etc. HELP!! I'M STARVING!! — lisafatnomore (posted on October 20, 2007)

I'm on a different program. You have to ask yourself "are you really
hungry?" What kind of surgery did you have? I had Gastric bypass,
and I say I'm starving all the time, but I don't really mean it, My mind
is hungry, but I'm not physically hungry. I think it's more mind over
stomach. Hang in there! Think about how good you'll look and feel later!

Why don't you just call his office and ask? Tell them you want to clairfy
which stage you should be at???? that would be easier don't you think?

At 4 days out you should be on milk liquids and then advance to pureed food
after the first week. You are not starving..that is head hunger talking.
I hardly ever felt hungry even many months post op. Try home made chicken
soup, saving the meat and pureeing and freezing it for later in the coming
weeks. Your pouch is still healing so you have to treat it with TLC. You
should be sipping everything slowly. I was using carnation instant
breakfast and making cream of wheat cereal (very watery) if I recall. On
Monday call the doctor's office and ask to clarify what you should be
having. Every doctor is different in their post op diet. Keep yourself
busy instead of constantly thinking about food.

Like the previous post said...call your Doc and ask because every docotr
has different ideas of what each stage consists of. Good Luck!

Lisa, if you are wondering, perhaps a call to your nutritionist is in
order. It seems to me that people may have a point with their comments
about head hunger.
I've noticed that each doctor seems to have a basic plan in common but the
specifics vary per person and practice. So get the individual care you
have paid so dearly for and contact them. Then follow the intructions.
You have spent so much time, effort and money to do anything other than
follow the guidelines.

Sugar free popscicles were my saving grace and they felt soothing to me.
Becareful though some say cold is aggravating to their pouch. And yes, a
call to the doctor's office and your nutritionist Monday is a good idea!
Good luch and take care sweetie! This too shall pass. Welcome to the
loser's bench!! ~Tomi

Wow, I am surprised you feel like you are starving. The site of food that
soon after surgery did not appeal to me. You should be able to have sugar
free jello and popsicles. Take it slow and have some type of liquid every
hour. 4 ounces every half hour kept me with a full feeling. I am on week
4 and still on soft foods. In my mind I don't want to push trying other
stuff because you will never get it back once you do. Stay on what the
docs tell you and in the long run you will be much better off. My sister
is one year out and has lost 170 pounds. I just keep listening to her
advice and it seems to be working. We both had the gastric sleeve. I am
down 35 pounds in 3 weeks. Good luck!

You didn't say what kind of surgery you had, I had a gastric bypass 2 1/2
yrs ago and if I remember right my 3rd stage was soft foods like mashed
potatoes, very soft mac n cheese, more veges in soups like carrots or
celery. just very very soft things and bland not alot of spices and nothing
that will cause gas!!. I used to get the small pull top cans of chicken
noodle soup (1 serving can, that you can microwave) eat off a baby spoon so
you don't take very big bites and eat very very slow.
good luck.

Hi Lisa, I don't know which type of surgery you had, but, I had a grds and
for the first 4 days I was advanced up to full liquids, after my 1 week
post op appointment the dr advanced my diet to soft, you don't want to eat
anything that's going to require alot of digesting, your stomach is healing
as well as alot of other areas depending on the type of surgery you had,
you also dont want to stretch your new stomach too soon, I know you feel
like you're starving, that feeling will go away but for now you need to
drink lots of water and protein drinks, it will get better...eat small
bites, protein first, drink lots of water get lots of rest and do lots of
walking. If you could tell me what type of surgery you had it would be
easier for me to help you...Best of luck, Melody

What type of pre-op education did you have? Does your surgeon have a
patient education program? If not, you need to contact a bariatric program
in your area and sign up for pre-op and post-op education classes. Your
question should have been answered before surgery, and you should have
written material to reference. If you need information and cannot find it
locally, please contact me and I will be happy to send you patient
education material. Of course, I need to know what type surgery you had.
Best Wishes, Cindy in TX

I have ate mashed potatoes, and soft foods.. Of course, I was starving and
started early on my reg foods. so I may not be the one to give advice, but
I buy those frozen steamed vegetables, and they are high in sodium but 50
cal. and very little fat cal. Just eat slow.. and good luck. I'm 4 1/2
weeks out, and I go back to the doctor for my first fill on the 25th, which
is a week early but the only appt. I could get. I lost 9 lbs at the first
appt. but things are slowing down, But I've been depressed. I lost my dad
in June and it's really getting me down.. I miss him so much, so that
could be a big problem for me.

I had the bypass surgery (8-21-07 342 lbs).
My med folks told me that there are a lot of different reactions after the
surgery, so your experience is interesting, but similar to my own.
From the very beginning, I seem to have no trouble eating anything. I also
got hungry early on. I seem to tolerate almost ALL foods. Almost nothing
has ever made me sick. I CAN / I am capable of consumeing alot BUT I DO
NOT!
( I almost thought they really didn't do the surgery on me (LOL)!!!)
Talk to your medical staff & see if you need to increase the number of
meals from 3 to 5 or more a day. I needed more! so I had MORE clear
liquids/jello/applesauce/yogurt/broth/etc. don't get hungry, you'll start
make bad food choices.
I increased the meal-frequency & have still lost 47 in 2 months. i
schedule meals carefully & eat ALL that I am allowed. Once in a while
I still feel hungry, so I plan to eat BETTER the next day. I
"plan" items into my schedule (no snacking on junk!). I love
soft scrambled eggs/bananas/etc., so I had them often.
Keep a food diary so you can analyze what you're eating. (I use
myfitnesspal.com. It's a wonderful site because if you can weigh your
food, the site does the rest to tell you the nutritional worth. I plan out
the next day before I go to bed)
just keep eating MORE from your list by eating about every 3 hours until
bedtime. Eventually, I was able to calm down & think about it. I
really started getting full. I stopped the food "panic". This
2nd month & on will be much better since you'll be eating more
solid/wholesome foods (chewing).
Hang-n there!

I found that the egg drop soup was the most filling and satisfied me. When
I craved variety I had the SF ice pops. I also liked to make the slim fast
shakes with ice blended so it was like a thick shake.
You can do it!!!
