Question:
1 year or longer post ops...can you dump years after surgery?

i was just wondering does the dumping syndrome last for a short while or can it also happen 1,5 10 years later? i do dump if i eat anything with to much sugar.mainly i noticed it was if i eat it on a empty stomach.i avoid any sugar now.if it has more than 5 grams per serving i do not eat it.but i was just wondering how long does this affect happen?i had RNY july 28th and down 71 lbs.thanks in advance for any info.    — carolyn1970 (posted on December 5, 2009)

yes, its been 5 years for me and i still do dump when i eat the wrong thing, but that lets you know you made a bad choice in what you ate.

I think it totally depends on the person because it has only been about 7 months going on 8 for me and i no longer dump but than again i never really had much of a problem with it from the start maybe only 2 or 3 times total if that hope this helps and congratulations to you

I'm 16 months post op and I still dump. I have a rare disorder of dumping. I dump on sugar, fat, protein, almost anything. So yes, I think dumping can continue. Mine is not going away. I dumped on Thanksgiving day after eating 6 grapes!!!! Everyone is different...so I can't say it will continue to plague you, but it can continue.

Yes, dumping can continue for years -- but it can get better, change on what you dump on, or can cease entirely.

If your Not Eating what your Not suppose to be Eating, Then you won't need to worry about Dumping.

I am 15 months out following RNY surgery. I have never done the dumping thing at but but, funnily enough, it has NOW started to kick in - found it with ice cream (I figure it is because it has both high sugar & high fat!)

Yes some people can. I am almost 6 years post-op and I still dump on sugar contents 7 grams or higher and greasy fried foods. I can eat broccoli without cheese and have no problem, but add cheese to it and I am ill feeling for several hours. Splenda is what I use for sweetening stuff and when I use more than 4 packets it makes me dump. So I would say it depends on the person.

I have a friend who is 2 almost 3 years out and has even had a reversal and she still dumps. I think it just depends on the person whether they will or for how long.

Yes, Yes, Yes... You eat the wrong things and you will dump. I am 2years out and have lost 135lbs. But yes I still dump if I do not watch what I eat. Sugar is a no no.......

I am about 15 months out and yes I still dump but only when I do something that I shouldn't be anyway. Sugar still gets me but I no longer have the same issues with dairy or greese... I also have a huge issue if I drink to soon after eating. But, when you think about it I am glad. I think all of us have a problem with food choices or we wouldn't have needed the surgery in the first place. This helps me to stay honest.

Rather than worry about dumping later, you should focus on NOT eating those foods that make some of us dump (only in moderation). If you stick to that midset always, you can enjoy being thin and healthy for YEARS! I am almost 6 years po and can and do still dump if I eat out and can't see how much fat or sugar is in something...Try your best to not focus on "what if's" but rather focus on "CAN DO's"...You can mind what you eat whether you dump or not! Good luck!

Yep I am 15 years out and you would think that after that long I would have this mastered, but every now and then I slip-up and YES my body still dumps!!

Had surgery 2/15/2007.... going on 3 year anniversary. I still dump if I eat too much sugar and/or fat. I can consume more than in the beginning, as my pouch matured ----- but yes. I still dump if I over indulge. Which, I try NOT to do.

I had RNY in June of 2008. I never had a dumping episode till I was about a year out. Then it hit. My blood sugar drops dramatically (I am not a diabetic) if I have something that I shouldn't. Kind of scary, so I always make sure that I have a hard piece of candy in my purse just in case it happens when I am out and didn't realize something that I ate (thinking it was acceptable) turns out to cause a drop in sugar.

I am 10 years out this week and for the last two weeks have been dumping every night with dinner. I'm even vomiting on some occasions. It doesn't really matter what I eat, it happens all the time. I was thinking I needed to check in with my DR. Any ideas?
