Question:
has anyone had any type of problems with oral thrush?
i am 6 yrs post-op and las Feb i started having an oral thrush problem. it first starts in my throat and esophagus and then my mouth, it,s very painful and bothersome. i have been to my family Dr. and she has run every type of blood test possible and everything turns up o.k. she is treating me with Diflocan and it does help but when i stop taking it, it always comes back. i,m having this about once a month. i have researched my symptoms on the internet, and it sounds like i have something like "Oropharyngeal Candidiasis" one of the things that causes this is due to nutrition.i was just wondering if anyone has had this or knows anything about it? — pmcconnell3004 (posted on November 18, 2009)

My wife is a nurse practitioner and has used Gentian Violet quite
successfully to treat thrush. It has one unfortunate side effect. Violet
is also known to some as purple. Gentian Violet is VERY purple. It is
known to cause stains that do not easily come out, and will also stain your
mouth and skin for quite some time. It is effective, but you may want to
take it on a weekend if you are concerned about staining yourself.

There is a swish and swallow med called nystantin, ask your doc about it. I
am a nurse and thrush is common in elderly with dentures. It acts quickly
with no side effects.

Hello. I too have had problems with thrush. Mine was caused from reusing
my water bottles without them being cleaned sufficiently. There was mold
inside the bottles and I didn't know it. Diflucan is great for the female
version of yeast infection that women tend to get or other areas of the
body. But with the oral yeast infections (which is what that is) is best
treated with nystatin as another person posted on here. That's what my
doctor has given me every time. It is the only thing I have found that
actually works. It takes a few days for me, usually about 4 to 5 before
the infection begins to back off. Ask your doctor to let you give it a
try.

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about this, as you said, it's very painful. I
have a friend that gets this (she has Lupus) and she was just talking about
thrush the other day. She said it's due to low immunity or people with
autoimmune disorders. You might have your labs done and see if you are
lacking a particular vitamin/mineral. I see that your doctor has run
everything, but still, it's worth looking into your nutrition to see if
something is lacking. She also takes Diflocan and seems to work for her,
good luck with everything!

Hello I know that pain! almost like that famous hot chocolat burn right??
Thick yellow white on the tounge and possiblly cheeks??? Nystatin is the
way to go. Just swish, hold and swallow. Sweet tasting not bitter or awful
at all , non staining. They even give this to babiesand seniors with no
side effects. I personally got it from not wrencing my mouth enough after
taking my asthma pump meds (Symbicort and Ventoline) If you are using these
meds you might want to use a aro chamber that also really helps.
If your family doctor dosen't find the answer just go to your local walk in
clenic and they will simply perscribe Nystatin. Fast acting and easy to
use.

I had the exact same thing and it came from not rinsing my mouth while
taking my Advair inhaler for COPD. My Doc told me that antibiotics
generally don't work. You need the rinse everyone is talking about in the
previous posts. it's not expensive, but the pharmacist has to mix it for
you. My doctor and pharmacist simply called it "Magic
Mouthwash". I know that name sounds far fetched, but it does work.
If your Doc doesn't know what you are talking about, or if your pharmacist
doesn't either, you will have to try a more experienced pharmacist. Hope
this helps. I know it's just a miserable thing to have. Good luck!

I seemed to have a reaction to the active ingredient in Ambien, it made my
mouth so sore I couldn't even talk or swallow. Not to mention other
issues, but do an inventory of the meds you are taking. One could be
mixing with the other or mixing with a food you are eating.

REFLUX... I started having issues after almost 10 years out.
I thought it was thrust too. Guess what? I had a swallow
test for an upcoming revision, and was told I had severe
reflux caused from a hernia. The stomach acids cause the
painful issues. I had the lap band. I am having a revision/VGS and having
the hernia repaired at the same time Tuesday. Check out Reflux on the
internet. Ask your MD about having a swallow test. I didn't know how bad
mine was until then. I went through many diflocan pills and Whish and
swallow's over the past 3 years. Good Luck. Pat-T.
