Question:
Can I take Communion wafer and wine after Roux-en-Y?
I am Roman Catholic and take Communion wafer and sip of wine each week at church. Will I still be able to receive Communion after my surgery? (The wafer dissolves in the mouth). Thanks! Patti Poor, Cartersville, GA — poorpatti (posted on October 14, 2009)

Sure ya will! The wafer certainly isn't going to hurt you. And such a
small amount of wine isn't going to either. I hate to admit this but I
drank 2 glasses of wine just 10 weeks post op. Luckily, it did not bother
me in the least. But it was NOT a smart thing for me to try so soon. So I
don't recommend anyone else do that. So you just go on with your holy
self! :)

I have never had a problem with this. I joke that I do get a buzz from the
wine. I have never been a big drinker.

I didn't drink wine but did communion the very next week. I let it sit on
my tongue until it completely dissolved. No problems at all.
I skipped the wine though.

I have been amazed that the communion wine still burns all the way down 6
months out of VSG. But it doesn't cause any problems, and the burning
sensation helps with the imagery of the Sacrament! Go for it.

Our service offers both wine and grape juice. I usually stick w/ the juice
since it's close to the end of the service and I have to drive. (OK, that
and the wine doesn't taste that great.) Either way, it's just a sip really.
I usually hold the wafer in my mouth until I sip to help it go down better
since it's so dry.

I am also Roman Catholic and receive the Body and Blood of Christ each time
I go to Mass. I have absolutely no problem receiving the Sacrament. If
receiving the wine burns a little going down either just touch it to your
lips or only receive the body. His full presents is in both the Body and
Blood.

I had no problem taking communion. I did and still do get the warm
sensation as it goes to my stomach, but I think that adds to the beauty of
the sacrament. Sip away! Deb
