Question:
How soon can you have a hysterectomy?

I am 13 months post op and I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and it feels like I had my gastric bypass all over again. I couldn't eat, drink etc. I had to eat like I did when I first got my bypass. My question is, was it too soon to have a hysterectomy or any other kind of surgery at this point? It sure seemed that way. I really suffered with this surgery, not only because of the pain of the surgery but dealing with the eating issues and hydration was awful. Thank you.    — okbuffy (posted on June 16, 2009)

I would think that 13 mons. post op was plenty of time to wait before having the hysterectomy. I'm sorry, I really don't know why it would've affected you in the way it did. I hear that a hysterectomy is a really tough surgery to have at any time. I'm just sorry that you've had such a tough time. I hope you're feeling better very soon. I'd ask my weight loss surgeon what his thoughts are on this topic.

I don't think you had the surgery too soon after the previous one. My doc told me 3 months. I had my knee replaced 6 months after my RNY and went through almost the same thing you describe. I still can't eat like I could before the knee surgery, and it's 4 months later. We just have a new "baby pouch" and it takes time. You did good and will recover okay I am sure. Congradulations on all your success and I hope you are feeling better soon!

I had a hysterectomy four months out. I took me a full 8 weeks to recover. I am now 6 months out and doing fine. Hang in there, things will be just fine!

I had my gastric bypass in February 2008, and in December of the same year I had a full hysterectomy, followed by a knee surgery six weeks later. I had no problems with either food or nausea, or excessive pain, but I guess that I'm just weird. I knew that I couldn't exercise for a long time and I did not want to gain any weight, so I went on a liquid diet after the knee surgery. During my two months of physical therapy I drank lots of protein shakes mixed with fruit and a lot of milk and clear soup - just like stage two after the gastric bypass. I was so happy for the knowledge and experience that I got from the gastric bypass that when I faced these two new surgeries I felt secure, strong, fearless, and powerful. Hysterectomy is a major surgery and we have to be patient with our bodies. My advice to you if you'd like is: try to stay positive and try to keep active - it will bring lots of energy to you, and put a smile on your face; contact your gynecologist with any and all of your concerns - please remember that no question or symptom is ever embarrassing or "unimportant". You matter and your medical team is there for you at all times. They would rather know in advance of your condition then be surprised. Things will get better. Good luck to you. Aurora
