Question:
Any medications for back pain??

I was just shy of my 6 week mark, and all ready to hit the gym, the following week when I threw my back out. Now it's killing me!! I've been getting treated at the chiropractor, but it's not enough. It's affecting my job,( I can't take any more days off), driving, and basically getting comfortable in any way. I tried Tylenol, but it's doing NOTHING. Is there any other type of pain killer or something I can take? I'm getting no relief from anything at all. And I want to start exercising... I'm gonna try calling my DR. tomorrow, but was just wondering if anybody had some insight. Thanks!!    — nyckitty (posted on April 7, 2008)

I have had back pain for a few years now and the only relief has been accupuncture and I also get it for allergies which stopped my migraines. Look on line for a reputable one in your area. I found one through a friend and I drive 1 hour twice a month for him! Good Luck and great job! Lori in Michigan

Stay away from Asprin and anti-infamatories as they can burn a hole in your pouch. I take LoraTab, which is the same drug they sent me home from the hospital with in liquid form. Any docotr that knows you are in pain will perscribe it for you. I take 10 MG's at night before bed to get a good night rest and I cut them in half during the day, taking one with breakfast and one with lunch. That gets me through the day. Don't take a larger dose during the day, because they will make you tired and it is not safe to drive on a high dose. When I am home on the weekends, I take a larger dose. I got to the gym and do workouts that do not effect my back. I got rid of the chiroprator and just got my regular doctor to perscribe the drub, and hiored a fitness trainer that has done more for my back than any Chiropractor that I went to. I got my injury from an auto accident, so my insurance pays for masages twice a week, which I take after training sessions. Best of success to you.

Hi...I hate to tell you this but I know from personal experience that no medications can do much for back pain. ( I have had serious problems and a long history, finally surgery..) I love my chiropractor and it helps but to keep the ajustments working my absolute best advise to ease the pain is alternating ice and warmth. Be very careful of your movements as well and be sure to stretch it out very slowly. For now I would see if your doc would refer you to a physical therapist so you can get up to doing what you need without causing any damage It's really important to do everything right at this point. A physical therapist is usually a pretty easy referral and a positive helpful influence. They should be able to give you the workout you need and the pampering to walk out of there. If It gets really bad the Other thing that is done sometimes is a spinal block...which will numb the pain for about a week. I doubt you could get this done though...It's pretty last ditch. I really feel for you... Theres nothing worse than back pain and to have it now when you so need to get the new body moving is a real bi..h. Tonite if your still awake try some ice packs then a hot water bottle...Good luck and you have my sympathy...hugs...but not tight ones!

I've been experiencing back pain since losing weight and joining the gym and my Dr just prescribed me muscle relaxers. He did say to take an extra nexium on the days I take them but other than that they were OK to take. You might want to ask your Dr about muscle relaxers. Good luck and God Bless, Debi

Ultram works well for me. It is not as strong as Vicodin and it doesn't make you feel as drowsy.

I had 2 bad accidents and suffer from chronic back pain from bulging, hernitations, and severe nerve damage. My pain meds look like this. Right now I am taking Roxicet 15mg after being on 10mg percocets and oxyconton. I take soma now after the amtrix (this is a time released flexeril) soma and flexeril are muscle relaxers, oh yea at one point I was on liquid valium for muscle relaxing (way too tired for day work). You first want to make sure that you just have a muscle strain and not something more serious such as herniation....although you have to suffer a bigger impact for something like this...but you never know. Until you get on some meds do ice for 20 min then heat and alternate this things as long as needed. For the day buy those therma wraps which is heat and you can wear for up to 8 hours. Finally I was told and have read that a day or 2 of rest then you need to start working those muscles again. Start with some light stretching and work up from there. I empathize with you, on Friday I just had an ablation done in my lumbar....burning of my nerves so for now I am pain free down there. Best to ya!!!!

I too have suffered severe back problems thru-out my life. Ice & heat are key. Chiropractic is great and combine it with acupuncture (really helps). Before i get out of bed every morning i gently pull each knee to my chest (or as far as i can get it) one at a time and do a gently stretch. My sister is a massage therapist and she recommended it to me while i was on vacation and threw out my back. Sometime's it's the only thing that will help get me out of bed. But this stretch will stretch everything (gently) from your neck to your toes and keep your back from binding up on the nerves. I find that when i'm under alot of stress and my body is tense is when my back goes out. Meds will help you get through the day, i find that vicoden is usually enough for the pain and a good muscle relaxer like flexofil. But in order to HEAL your back you must use ice/heat alternatley and gently stretch those back muscles and a couple of days rest to let the muscle relaxers work. When my back is out real bad i do all these things and can usually recover in a couple of wks.

I haven't had any trouble with Anti-inflammatory meds like mentioned in someone elses response. I had a slipped disk about 3 years ago (post-op) and I went to a chiropractor, took advil and the magical thing was I sprung for a Temperpedic Mattress. All three things combined gave me complete relief and I have not had trouble since.

Try Body Stress Release, if you have a practitioner in your area, they do amazing work and helped me so much with back pain that Ive decided to go and study to become a practioner ! Have a look at www.bsr.co.za and you can do a search for your area.

I'm a Registered Pharmacist so I'd recommend asking your doc about a more selective anti-inflammatory such as CELEBREX (Celecoxib) before graduating to narcotics for the pain. This drug tends to be less irritating to the stomach than ibuprofen or other NSAIDs. Tylenol can help with pain but does nothing for inflammation. If CELEBREX does not help, I'd say ask doc about ULTRAM (Tramadol). It's classified as a narcotic but it has less abuse potential and side effects than LORTAB or PERCOCET. Good luck.

I have not had weight loss surgery, so I cannot comment on what meds to take, but I have tried heating pads, Lidocaine patches, Thermacare, epi-durals and numerous pain meds. If you are getting pain down your leg, it could be sciatica nerve pain, (pinched nerve). Have you had back x-rays or an MRI to check for bulging or herniated discs? My Drs. keep telling me to swim for exercise or at least walk in the water. Good luck with your pain. It definitely isn't nice to have any kind of back pain, speaking from experience. Take Care..........

You need to talk to your doctor and/or surgeon. You might want to ask about taking ibuprofen, motrin, aleve, or a prescription anti-inflammatory. Some doctors say no NSAIDS, others have no problems with them. You may need to see an orthopedist or back specialist to make sure that you haven't slipped a disc or done any kind of damage. Ice, heat, and massage are all good things to try. You might need some physical therapy or "back school" to get over this... check with your doctor. I'd avoid narcotics as much as possible because a) they have a potential to be addictive b) they will mess up your stomach motility which can cause nausea, vomiting, and constipation and c) if your complaint is that pain is interfering with work and driving, narcotics (and side effects) are likely to interfere as well, for example drowsiness, impaired judgement, slowed reactions making driving dangerous... Call your pcp or surgeon and see what s/he recommends. Best wishes.
