Question:
5-1/2 years post-op and gained back 50 lbs. Please help !!!
I need to stop this now and today is the day to get back on track. I would sincerely appreciate any advice, support, or comments you can provide if you've been where I'm at. I plan to get back to basics beginning today and stick to several days of liquid diet then reintroduce protein and stick to 15 minute meals. Hopefully, I can find success in removing this excess weight. I have kept 80 lbs off, but need to lose this 50 lb gain. Please help. — minischnauz (posted on January 3, 2009)

Do this!!!! Get all bad foods out of the house. Go back to liquid diet
like post op for a few days. Remember the popcycles, jello, broth? Use a
protein shake for your protein. You will start to drop. Don't undo all
you've worked so hard for!!! Good luck, and I wish you much success!!!

Hi I know how you feel, I have gained back apx 30 pnds since last Oct 2007
as I was on steriods for over 5 months and gained 15-20 pnds from that and
then the rest is just my fault after I got off the steriods i continued to
eat like i was still on them and now I have 30 pnds to lose that I so
desperatly want to lose...I am 7 yrs out from wls and have always manage to
keep my goal weight even after having two kids almost back to back but
after the steriods I just lost all my control and now its time to get it
back..I think we can do this we just need to remember why we had the
surgery in the first place and go back to the basics but first we gotta cut
the junk out of our life which i have done already today.. i have been
drinking protien shakes and lemmon aid drinks (which i got from the master
cleanse diet program) i am NOT following the program to the T, but I am
using it to help cleanse myself out and incorporating a better plan for
myself to use other wise i will give up and so far so good...My husband
and i have already done alot of searching for more healthier foods and
choices which we have already incorporated into our lives and i ordered the
richard simmons dvd's so i can start working out ... I know we can do this
I know we can get back to our goal weight we just need to stick to our guns
and do what is best for ourselves...if you want to chat just email me at
[email protected] and put in the subject line obesity help member or
something so i know who is writing me otherwise i tend to delete ... i wish
you well i know you can do this stay strong and focused...

Glad to finally see a post from someone who's long-term post-op, even tho'
it's with a problem. I had my surgery in 6/2001 & about three yrs ago
also started going off the path. In addition to getting the junk out of the
house, I think we need to rethink our relationship to food. I still use it
as an emotional crutch. Also, had to basically stop exercising since my
favorite was walking and I'd developed a bad sun sensitivity and live in an
area where the sidewalks are broken up and not safe at nite (poor lighting,
also). If you would like, we can correspond and maybe work this out
together.
P.S. I never heard of the pouch test Jennifer mentioned, nor did she post
the name of the book in her post. However, I do know that when I eat slowly
enough my pouch works fine even tho' it has probably stretched with time,
as is natural.

Hi, I am 4years post op RNY. Lost 100 pounds, gained back 30. Lost 17 of
those pounds recently with Weight Watchers and jogging/walking two miles a
day. I try to take it slow and not concentrate on how long it's going to
take me to lose it all. You can do it, if I can. Good Luck

Heather, I just wanted to say that I hope that you are successful in
getting the weight off again. My surgery is in about two weeks and I
understand that it can be very difficult to keep it off. I hope that you
are following a regular diet and getting some good exercise.
I hope that it all works out for you. Good luck!

My surgeon told me (I am 4 months out of a VS) no need to go back to the
protien shakes ever. You know, you might want to read up on a few things
though, because weight loss for bariatrics has been tweeked and refined
since 5 1/2 years ago. The type of surger you had would affect how you
want to proceed though. Exercise is a very important additional tool you
must incorporate into your strategy. Just remember you must have at least
80 ounces of water daily, 60 grams of protien daily, avoid caffiene, avoid
refined sugar, and avoid hydogenated and harmful fats. Do you still go in
for checkups with your surgeon? Did you have a weight-loss team that
helped you? Can you return there for help?

Thanks to all for you great encouragement. Unfortunately, I no longer see
my surgeon. I know, it sounds crazy, but I just can't afford it. I went
through all the hoops to have the insurance company pay for the surgery and
after having it done, my insurance refused to pay. I had both the surgeon
and my primary doctor write letters stating medical need, but insurance
still refused payment. They even went so far as adjusting their benefits
to refuse payment for any bariatric procedures including office visits. My
surgeon was wonderful and was willing to take payments, but it took me
years of monthly payments to pay it off and I just can't afford to begin
paying off visits again. I do see my primary physician regularly, but
that's it. I do exercise every day for approximately 1 hour. I do 1/2 hour
of walking for 2 miles and 1/2 hour of stationary bike riding for 5 miles.
When I don't do that, I try to do at least 1/2 hour of weight lifting. I
have gone back to sugars though, because I've found that they don't bother
my pouch at all. I also graze a lot, which I know is just wrong. I know
what I have to do. I have to go back to basics. I also don't get in as
much water as I should. These are things I need to work on, and I'm ready.
This will be a good year, but at this point, I need to take it one day at
a time and get through each day until it becomes routine again. Thanks
again for your encouragement. I'm getting through the day by knowing that
total strangers care about me and my progress. That means so much.

I have my nutrition booklet, that I have had several requests for, that I
can send to you if you give me your e-mail address. You can e-mail me at
[email protected] and request a copy, if you wish to. It's what I had
to go back and start over with during my plateau. Hope to hear from you
soon!!!
