Question:
Two weeks post op from Surgery

I am now two weeks out from my Gastric Bypass and I am on Phase II of the diet, where I only eat one protein source for a meal. IE: I can have carnation (sugar free breakfast drink for breaksfast), egg, sugar free pudding, cream soup, fat free skim milk or broth that I like. The other things I can I have I do not like. At first I was doing my meals like I was being served in the hospital with broth, jello, and pudding and only eating a portion of each. (each serving was only 4 ouces). Then New Years Eve I was incredibly hungry and I ate my whole portion of my egg and my portion of pudding. I made my self stop but was still hungry. I waited my half hour and got my 4 ounces of water. Then I re looked at my instructions and decided that I should only be eating one protein source at meal time. So I have since change this around but I can now eat my whole protein source. Is this normal at this stage? Sometimes I am still hungry or at least I think I am. I don't think it is gas bubbles.... I am working really hard to not give into the head games and to concentrate on my diet and my fluid intake. I will discuss all this with my doctor next week but I was wondering if this is a normal thing I am going through.    — iwilllose (posted on January 4, 2008)

TOTALLY head hunger--- it lasted about a month for me, where I actually felt like I was starving--- but it's all in your head, don't worry. Just keep getting your protein and fluids and vitamins. Don't worry! :) I used to cry when I saw people eating cheesburgers.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Of course, talk to your doc next week. But yes, eat your protein first and foremost, stay hydrated and keep up on your vitamins and supplements you will pull through like a trooper!

Yes, that is normal and it is totally head hunger. You need to make sure what you eat has protein in it since you are limited right now at how much you can eat. Once you get farther out yo can have a little veggies and starch but still mostly protein. I was told by my NUT it should be in that order, protein, veggies and then starch. Good luck and welcome to the losing side!

I was the same way never felt that full feeling but I would stop eating, but now I get full but some times I am still hungry but I stop. I think most of it is even though our stomachs are smaller are brain is still the same it took me about two months or so for my brain to catch up with my stomach but it is still a work in progress. hang in there things will change

You know, while I think it is probably that head hunger we newbies hate hearing about, it also may be partly what you are eating and how quickly you are eating. Say for instance you are eating yogurt...it goes right through the pouch. Most liquidy or pureed food does tend to go right through, so that's why you need to know how much to eat per meal. At two weeks I would chek with your doc, but I was eating about 1/3 C. By 4 weeks about 1/2 C. That too will vary depending on what you are eating...but that is about the maximum I would eat per meal. Again, please check with your doc because we all have different guidlelines. My other piece of advice ( and this is something I still am working on) eat slowly. It's tough to eat baby bites and eat slowly when you feel hungry...but that may help achieve that full feeling. God bless....
