Question:
Protein source

I like all the replies to the gal that wants to lose eight lbs, however I have a question? I can't tolerate protein from an animal source, so how do I get protein if I don't supplement from a shake? I take one shake a day, then I eat beans, cheese, yogurt, and not too much more. My NUT told me to have 85 grams of protein daily.    — FSUMom (posted on June 19, 2011)

Sounds like your doing the best you can. So you cant tolerate animal protein:( Try adding just a tiny bit of animal protein and increasing it daily over time. this should allow you to tolerate it again:)

I use UNJURY...they have an unflavored type and I am able to use a scoop in my oatmeal/cream of wheat/mashed potatoes/soup. It provides 28 grams of protein and is, at least for me. an easily digested form of protein.....good luck

Tofu is a good source of protein also, plus it takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. Just 3 oz of tofu is almost 13 grams protein.

I have been doing a LOT of reading on the protein shakes as I was not able to eat enough protein after my surgery & I started losing a LOT of hair. I was not able to drink the Boost Shakes as they made me ill, so I started doing some research. I found that 100% Whey Protein to be the best one to help with fat loss. The key is to make sure you find one that is low in fat, sugar & overall calories. Body builders do use protein shakes to repair muscles after working out & to lose the fat that is covering up their muscles before they compete. Here's an article that I found helpful - http://promotehealth.info/?p=1548. I have been drinking 1 scoop of the protein powder mixed with 1 cup of skim milk for breakfast (sometimes I will throw in some frozen fruit or 1/2 a banana). I am almost 6mnths post-op & down 88lbs so far. You need to do your research & do what's best for you. Eating your protein is definitely the best was to go but if you are like me & cannot eat enough, then look into the low calorie protein shakes for the supplement (when in doubt - consult your NUT - that's what they are there for). Good luck!

Hey FSUMom! Check out this link for a table of foods starting with highest protein content first. (I have not verified their #'s scientifically, but they look realistic to me.) http://www.soystache.com/sources_of_protein.htm#Source then, more nutrition tables that could be helpful too, are here: http://soystache.com/nutritiontables.htm Good to see you! :-)
